My favourite was Valley Of The Dolls. Harold Robbins wrote a lot of books set around then as well. Mind you it is a very long time since I read them and I was very young and now find most authors I read back then beyond scary bad these days.

The February Bookclub book is A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute. It takes place in the 50s. It starts off in the 40s and moves to the 50s.

How about Leslie Charteris's the Saint Series. I think you might enjoy them. They were quite popular in their day. I found the series light reading without all the 'blood, guts, and gore' a lot of today's writers like to describe.
