KF8 converts easier to ePub then Mobi. That is if this version is good and I cannot get it in ePub elsewhere.

Hey guys, is there a free kindle version of Charles Wilbour's translation of Les Miserables anywhere out there? The only kindle version I've been able to find is the 10 dollar Modern Library version, but it's in the public domain and should be available for free... I'm kind of suspecting a case of copyfraud, in fact.

Or, alternatively, is there a non-free version of a truly non-abridged translation? I want COMPLETELY unabridged, which is why the Hapgood and Denny translations are out.

I'm sort of despairing of ever finding a copy that fits the above criteria. I'm thinking of either reading a hardcopy version, or waiting until my French gets better.

Why don't you simply buy the Wilbour version, if you like it? The fact that something is in the public domain assuredly doesn't mean that anyone is under any obligation to give it to you free of charge; anyone can do whatever they wish with a work that's in the public domain, including charge for it. You could, for example, buy the Wilbour translation, remove any copyrighted material from it (introduction, footnotes, etc) and then give it to anyone you wished to.

it was the first novel I ever read in French. It's actually not that difficult compared with some other French writers of the 19th century. If you have any French you might try it, or even side by side with an English version.

I read it 52 years ago and have never reread it, so I retain more an impression than a full memory.
