Problem converting CBR comic into PDF

As the title says, I'm trying to convert a CBR comic into PDF format for use on a Kindle. The process won't work for reasons I don't understand, and the details regarding the failure make no sense to me. Nonetheless, I have pasted the error message details below in the hope someone who does understand it can help me.

I think that is saying that calibre does not think it is a valid format cbr (RAR) file.

Try opening your cbr file with winrar and, if it succeeds, then convert it into a cbz file, that will fix your error.

I just tried converting from cbr to cbz using winrar (though I really don't understand what I'm doing). I think it succeeded in converting the file type and opening the cbz in calibre, but attempts to convert into PDF bring up the following message, which may be the same or different from the first one;

According to that error there are no images inside the cbz.
