I believe it was lifted quite some time ago. British beef is perhaps the safest in the world these days - there's a national database which tracks the breeding history of every animal.

EDIT: According to this article, US beef is imported into the EU, but only with guarantees that no growth hormones have been used. There is a ban on importing beef with growth hormones.

As a junk food lover, I often eat at McDonald's all over the world. Unfortunately, there actually ARE some countries where there is a definite taste difference in the Big Mac. In Thailand they are almost inedible! (Thai beef is horrendous!) They would be better served using horse meat!

The French started eating horse meat after the revolution. When you're starving because your ruler is more concerned with his own comforts than with taking care of its people it's a recipe for trouble. And of course starving people will eat anything. I've never had it but I understand at least as late as WWII people could buy it at the local butcher shop.
