Definitely worth a look, but I wouldn't want people to go into it thinking it's anything like THG either in content or general feel. And at least the first book felt more "targeted mainly at children" (8-10-year-olds) to me than some other middle-grade fantasy series which have successfully crossed over to YA and adult reader segments (e.g. Harry Potter; Rick Riordan's series; Skulduggery Pleasant). |

The Giver by Lois Lowry is really good.
The Tripod trilogy by John Christopher is similar to The Hunger Games, but better. It's really really really good. It's about a not-too-distant future Earth where humans have been conquered by aliens who control people by mind control. It's all about this one kid who decides to fight against them. Unlike the Hunger Games, the trilogy just gets better and better as it continues. Don't bother with the fourth book which is a prequel. Here's the link to the first one: http://www.amazon.com/The-White-Moun...ref=pd_sim_b_2

Could try The Maze Runner by James Dashner which is part of a trilogy. I really enjoyed that.

I just got done with the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness and I think it's the first dystopian-ish YA series since The Hunger Games that I actually ended up finding excellent. It's not set on Earth but on a colonised planet at some point in the future.
The first book is The Knife of Never Letting Go, and it's well worth a look. The beginning may be a struggle - it was for me, and for a lot of people, I think, but getting through that is well worth it. (It's not due to slowness or anything; it's just a very different world than ours in one important way, and the writing style / narration of the main protagonist takes some getting used to.) |

Someone suggested The Giver series by Lois Lowry, and I second that.
Also, there are some great books that have been out for a while (or a very long time) that you might enjoy. 1984 by George Orwell is probably my favorite book ever. Also: Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, The Handmaid's Tale. |

If you want a different kind of dystopia that has some of the same fast-paced immediacy that Hunger Games has...Susan Ee's Angelfall is good. The apocalypse here is that Angels have invaded Earth and basically brought it to ruin in a matter of days, enslaving the human race and making the world their own. It's about a girl named Penryn trying to find her little sister, who's been taken by Angels.
I liked the book a lot. Links deleted by moderator. Please take a moment to read the Posting Guidelines, and note particularly that the use of URL shortening services is not permitted for forum posts. Last edited by HarryT; 02-01-2013 at 11:53 AM. |
