My goal this weekend is to get a friend hooked on Firefly.

We were going through my movie collection the other day and he said "I still haven't seen Serenity yet". So I told him he needs to watch the series first. I might bring my DVD's to his house tomorrow...

Well, I stayed up late last night to get this book finished (it's not a long book, and I'm a fast reader!). Tis good! I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen the TV series (not enough description), but it captures the characters and their dialogue very well, a good plot, and made me smile a lot. Not as good as another series, but a nice blast of good stuff for the Browncoats out there.

After 46 downloads, we're getting a few similar downloads on Feedbooks. Firefly fans love Peter Watts ;-)

Rats, I should have posted this-- I've been following Brust's efforts to get the book published commercially for months.

I suppose now we'll have to add Firefly stuff (that somehow doesn't infringe on Whedon's copyright) to the Adrilankha Gift Shop.

The author has managed to get the dialogue and the personality of the series right. Excellent! A great 'verse to visit.

Is this legal? It doesn't sound like he had permission from the shows creators. Am I wrong? Either way, I'll read it.

If he's providing the story for free (as he is), it is considered acceptable to most copyright laws (he is not directly profiting off of someone else's property). It makes his story nothing more than fan-fiction.

He could be doing it for purely promotional purposes, to gain a larger following for his for-profit writing, or to show the copyright owners that he can write Firefly stories, with hopes to get a contract to write more for profit. This, too, is considered acceptable by most copyright laws.

From what I've read, he originally wrote it as an official Firefly tie-in novel, but then Fox decided not to publish any tie-in novels after all. He's been trying to persuade them to let him publish it for a while, with no luck, so decided to give it away instead, since the fans who'd heard him reading excerpts at conventions really liked it.
