I seem to use the mid-range most (13-17). I turn it down when I notice the lighting itself, turning it down to the highest level where I don't "see" the light.
My battery life seems really good (20-odd hours with lots of page turns and dictionary look-ups) but I also keep wifi off. |

On the 3rd day I turned the light as low as it would go (apparently off) and left it that way.

Generally 11-12, no matter the lighting.

I'm surprised how low most people are keeping the light. Interesting.

From what I can tell, units have very different scales.
My PW seems to have a decent screen (pretty uniform, no color splashes) - but the light is much weaker compared to some I have seen. Below 4, it is barely noticeable in a dark room. There is no way to read below 10 in absence of other light. I keep it at 14 in darkness. 20 in lighted environments.

Setting 0 in pitch black.
Setting 1 in energy conservation mode Setting 4 when I don't care about energy Setting 10 when I want to see backlight in broad day light. I have to admit that the backlight looks tempting, and you want to put as much of it as you could possibly bare (kinda like sugar). But to stay healthy, I find any setting beyond 4 is not really necessary, as when the environment is light enough to blot out the screen light at setting 4, then it's light enough to be reading without backlight.

I keep it at level 22 because I like a BRIGHT, WHITE screen all the time. That is the whole idea of PaperWHITE!
Anything less than 22 changes the white to really off color. Battery time is irrelevant. I did not buy the PW to have a great battery. I'll wait for the new 3D batteries to be in the Kindles this Christmas. Anyway, getting 10 to 12 days of battery life at level 22 light level is just fine for me. |
