Thumbs up Free (Kindle UK) Kommandant's Girl by Pam Jenoff [WWII Historical Drama w/Romance]

Kommandant's Girl by Pam Jenoff (Wikipedia) is WWII-set historical literary fiction drama with romantic elements, revolving around the doomed relationship between a married Polish Jewish woman hiding under a false identity and her Nazi official employer, free courtesy of publisher Harlequin's MIRA imprint, which generally handles their crime and thriller and other non-dedicated-romance-genre lines. Jenoff also writes historical thrillers for Simon & Schuster's Atria imprint.

Wikipedia says this was nominated for a Quill Award.

I suspect this may be a glitch freebie since it is not also free in the other UK stores as Harlequin titles normally are and they'll probably fix it once they realize.

But it's a pretty nice and interesting-looking probably-glitch freebie and I've always liked seeing WWII homefront-type stuff showing the domestic effects of the conflict (insert standard recommendation for the excellent Foyle's War TV mystery series if you haven't been watching it already), and it's pretty rare for us to get standard secular historical literary fiction.

Currently free @ Amazon UK.

There's also a freebie standalone companion novella from MIRA meant to promote the e-release of this novel, The Other Girl, available @ B&N (also in the UK), Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK), Kobo (not available to Canadians), & Google Play (available to Canadians).

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook alert thread of the day.

Enjoy!

Description
Based in part on actual events, Kommandant's Girl is a compelling tale of love and courage in a dangerous and desperate times. Unique in voice and evocative in historical detail, this stunning debut faithfully explores the gray area between right and wrong and the timeless themes of home, stuggle and defiance in the face of overwhelming odds.

Nineteen-year-old Emma Bau has been married only three weeks when Nazi tanks thunder into her native Poland. Within days Emma's husband, Jacob, is forced to disappear underground, leaving her imprisoned within the city's decrepit, moldering Jewish ghetto. But then, in the dead of night, the resistance smuggles her out. Taken to Krakow to live with Jacob's Catholic cousin, Krysia, Emma takes on a new identity as Anna Lipowski, a gentile.

Emma's already precarious situation is complicated by her introduction to Kommandant Richwalder, a high-ranking Nazi official who hires her to work as his assistant. Urged by the resistance to use her position to access details of the Nazi occupation, Emma must compromise her safety—and her marriage vows—in order to help Jacob's cause. As the atrocities of war intensify, so does Emma's relationship with the Kommandant, building to a climax that will risk not only her double life, but also the lives of those she loves.

Happily, it turns out that this is indeed some sort of official promotion (or at least now a multi-store glitch freebie).

Now also free @ B&N UK & Kobo (available to the UK, most likely not elsewhere since this is a different edition than the North American release).
