CES 2013 - Resolution wars

Well, CES 2013 is already taking shape as a display resolution show:
- UltraHD for (very) large TVs, passive 3D that makes sense
- 300+ dpi for tablets
- 400+ dpi for smart phones

This excites me because of what it does to the prices of 720p and 1080p alternatives.

They're already cheap enough nobody is making any (significant) money.
Looking at the recent Black Friday sales it looks like 2013 prices will run 50inchers from $499 and we'll be seeing 65inchers at $1000.
Also, "big" is getting redefined at 80-plus inches. 50-72 inches is merely moderate size in the new market.

Anything under 50in is now officially small.

I expect we're going to see some pretty big players just give up on HDTVs.
(Sony is everybody's biggest suspect.)

LCD/LED are very inexpensive to manufacture at this time. Unless you insist on plasma, there is room for further discounting even before retailers start unloading old technology.
