Wharton, Edith: Madame de Treymes, v.1, 2 Feb 2008.
An innocent but honourable American in Paris, John Durham, meets Madame de Malrive, who is separated from her unpleasant husband, and falls in love. But her husband’s family – especially Madame de Treymes – engage in emotional blackmail. Surprisingly, they do not want to prevent a marrage ... I have restored accents, italics and emdashes, also I’ve inserted curly quotes. This work is in the Canadian public domain OR the copyright holder has given specific permission for distribution.
