Wharton, Edith: Madame de Treymes, v.1, 2 Feb 2008.

(1906)

An innocent but honourable American in Paris, John Durham, meets Madame de Malrive, who is separated from her unpleasant husband, and falls in love. But her husband’s family – especially Madame de Treymes – engage in emotional blackmail. Surprisingly, they do not want to prevent a marriage...

I have restored accents, italics and emdashes, also I’ve inserted curly quotes.
