what is the latest version of the kindle?

Hi Folks,

Just bought my daughter a kindle, and I'm looking through all the hacks now. But, I can't figure out which ones to look for, as I don't know what version of the kindle I bought. I just bought it today, for $69 with ads. I think it's version 5, but I don't see any jailbreaks, etc, referring to k5. Should I just follow instructions for the paperwhite?

Look for the K4 or K4NT as a description. The K5 would be a Kindle Touch or Paperwhite.

NT stands for Non-Touch.

Nothing, you just sometimes see it mentioned under both names.

K4NT is actually a pleonasm, as all K4 models are "non-touch".

It stems from the time when the Kindle 4 and Kindle Touch were released, and *both* of them were referred to as "K4" ("Touch" and "Non-Touch) - even if that's obviously wrong, because the Touch is a K5.

And for some reason, many people just stuck to calling it the "K4NT" instead of just "K4".

BTW, You'll occasionally see "K4S" and "K4B" as well - standing for "silver" (the old model) and "black" (the new model). In terms of software/hacking, these should be pretty much identical.

PS: The version numbers we use come directly from the device info dialog. So, in that numbering scheme, both the Touch and Paperwhite are K5*, and the Kindle Fires would be K6 (and K7?).

(*) That's actually a bit unfortunate. So people tend to be explicit when speaking about the Paperwhite ("PW"/"KPW"/"KP").

It's only "obviously wrong" if you're referring to firmware versions. When people started using the term "K4", they simply mean "the 4th generation Kindle". The fact that it was firmware version 4 really had nothing to do with it.

Amazon, like Apple, is very poor at naming devices. They create needless confusion by giving a newer version the same name as the previous version. Then they give the previous version a different name. What's with that? A simple naming scheme would avoid any confusion, while still maintaining brand recognition.

Kindle: K 1, K 2, K 3, K 4, K 5
Kindle Touch: KT 1, KT 2
Kindle Fire: KF 1, KF 2
Kindle Fire HD: KF HD 1
Kindle Fire HD 8.9": KF HD+ 1

iPod touch: iPt 1, iPt 2, iPt 3, iPt 4, iPt 5
iPad: iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4
iPad mini: iPad mini 1
