You mean alienate thousands of Kindle users from using the library? Why would you want to do that?

That's like me suggesting that they should remove ePubs!
What about the tens/hundreds(?) of thousands of Kindle users?!?

Actually, having Kindle eBooks is the reason why Penguin left because Kindle eBook violated the way the service is supposed to work. eBooks via Overdrive are supposed to be served from Overdrive's servers. The way Kindle eBooks work, they are served via Amazon's servers. Penguin didn't like that and left. If we remove Kindle eBooks until Amazon can give Overdrive a DRM server, then maybe we'll get Penguin eBooks back. Of course, if that was to happen, there's be no whispersync or keeping of highlights/notes. But then, that was never supposed to happen.

But to be totally honest, I'd rather have Penguin eBooks back at Overdrive then Kindle eBooks.

That isn't why Penguin stop giving new titles to libraries. It had nothing to do with Amazon. It had to do with piracy. They felt their new titles were being checkout and pirated all over the dark net.

The whole Penguin books have to be USB transfered was their way at getting back at Amazon. That was a different situation and nothing with new titles being pulled.

Penguin claims that because the Kindle eBooks are not served from an Overdrive server that there is a lack of security. Penguin left when Overdrive refused to drop Kindle eBooks.

It'd end up as a good way for libraries to reduce the money they spend on e-books, since the libraries would see a significantly lower amount of checkouts of e-books.

Given the strained resources of virtually all libraries these days, lower demand would mean that they would almost certainly cause libraries to shift a portion of their few $$$ from ebooks into other areas, like print books, audio/video materials or learning programs.

Either jswolf thinks libraries spend too much of their limited funds on ebooks, or that idea wasn't thought through to its likely real-world outcome.

Yes but then they came back and setup a compromised of penguin books could be transfer USB wise.

Penguin finally froze their new titles after they discovered that their new releases were being pirated right away. They blame the pirates were getting the ebooks from Overdrive libraries which is very possible and they were afraid they lose profits. It has nothing to do with Overdrive allowing Kindle books that had happen month or two earlier.

Do not agree. Though I generally read epub if there is a book I desire only available in kindle format I use the kindle app.

The point I am trying to make is that your suggestion is based on what you personally need, completely disregarding all patrons (and tax payers) with kindle devices.

It is like me suggesting to stop offering Mystery novels, which I don't read, so that more Fantasy novels can be purchased. Or like me suggesting to stop offering ePub, because I have a Kindle.

Maybe I can send Overdrive a list of books I already read, so they can discontinue them and purchase the books on my extended Amazon wishlist instead.
