Let me start off by saying I love this app and find it incredibly easy to set up and manage.

That being said I am having a devil of a time configuring it for my calibre server showing it in opds.

I run a free no-ip port 80 redirect to my server for the simple reason that my ISP blocks port 80. I have it configured so that no-ip host redirects to a non-80 open port on my computer which then redirects to a different calibre-server port (not the standard 8080).

I can access the library fine using the Web Browser section of the Marvin app using the no-ip hostname.
I can access the opds fine while on the network using the internal IP:Port/opds format (with the port set to the internal calibre port)
I can access the opds fine if I enter in my IP in the format of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:yyyyy/opds
(where yyyyy represents the externally open port)

But for some obscure reason I can simply not get it to access the opds using my no-ip address. FWIW if I use a web browser and simply type in my hostname.no-ip.com/opds it shows the feed fine (obviously in a non-readable version)as does it if I type in hostname.no-ip.com:80/opds but no matter what variations I use to configure it in Marvin I can't get it to work. hostname.no-ip.com/opds returns the result of invalid feed (I am guessing because it needs a port?). Adding :80 gives me the same result. Adding the externally open port achieves nothing and obviously the internal port calibre-server runs on isn't seen as open as I have my router redirect it.

Anybody got any ideas?

It's possible no-ip.com adds an extra page/frame for redirection. I remember this happening with Stanza when I set up my DynDNS webhop with host masking enabled. I just disabled host masking and everything is working well. In Marvin, I just add it as:
hostname.dyndns.com:external_port/opds

Not too familiar with no-ip but based on some quick reading, I suggest you create a normal redirect (not a port 80 redirect) and then add that to Marvin as:
hostname.no-ip.com:external_port/opds

Kris,

My wife borrowed my iPad 2 on which I have Marvin loaded with about 1100 epubs. The last few days I have been using her Kindle Fire (1st generation, not the HD) which has the same 1100 library loaded as 1100 mobi books.
The biggest difference I notice is the absence of the long pause while the Marvin app opens and loads the library and the shorter pauses between chapters (which don't coincide with the actual chapters) in the book. To me these pauses are irritating to the point that I am considering not going back to Marvin. I understand that the latest Marvin update reduces these delays, but I don't understand why these pauses exist at all when the less sophisticated iBooks and the Kindle readers do not have them.

If (as I think you have said) these pauses are necessary due to Marvin frontloading data, what are the gains that this frontloading gives? Is it possible to configure the app settings to change this behavior? If not, can this be considered for future releases for those of us who prefer to be able to read a book seamlessly and to close the app or switch between books with no delay? If it helps, I don't use features such as annotation, and deep reading and would forgo them for smoothness.

Rhialto, in the current beta versions currently being tested, all loading times (but especially the chapter loading time) have been improved *dramatically*, indeed.

The now-minimal pause when changing chapters isn't bothering *me* at least anymore while it definitely did in the released versions.

Thank you so much for that.

I hadn't even realized that host masking was an option and enabled by default with no-ip. Disabled it and am now good to go.

@Rhialto: What version of Marvin are you running (Home Screen, Settings [gear icon], About Marvin)? 1.8 is much faster than all previous versions.

@robin58: Glad you fixed this.

1.8

Thus my previous question stands; is there a possibility of some option in settings that would speed up reading and library loading at the cost of other functionality? I can find a stopwatch and time these delays if wanted.

I am new to Marvin and have only read through about the past two months of posts so I apologize if this has been asked and answered.

Is there a way to see the full length of a book, in pages or some other units? I use that in other readers, eg Kindle, as a relative thing - less important than the particular unit used is what that number tells me about how long this book is compared to other books. But Marvin tells me "pages left in chapter," so pages seems to be the unit used anyway. It seems like it must be possible to see total pages in book, and pages left to go in the entire book, but if so, I just can't figure out where that info is.

Along similar lines - is there any way to jump to a specific location/page in a book (not a chapter?)

If these features don't exist, I'd like to suggest them. Their absence is the one and only thing I miss from other readers when I read in Marvin.

Though I do have one more request/suggestion: any possibility the library Expanded view might also show the book's Collection, if any?

Thanks for your willingness to take suggestions, and for a great product - I found it when i went looking for an ereader app that allowed collections, and that's great, but also the sync with Calibre is unbelievably fantastic, and I've discovered many other features I love!

Jesscat,

You can calculate word count from the metadata screen in the library.
You can jump around in the book from the bottom toolbar that appears when you tap the screen in book. Click the arrows and drag to new position.

@jesscat, If you tap the header on the page (where you see the book name), you'll also see your percentage progress in the book.

Thanks all - I discovered I can get word count, and I do like that. But it is only visible in expanded library view. What I was looking for, what I want and really miss, is something that tells me *while I am reading* where I am in the book - page 45 of 250, or even word 10k of 100k. The little status bar at the bottom, and the percentage that I can see if I click on the top, are helpful, but if it is possible to tell me how many pages left in the chapter, why not in the whole book? Or maybe in the pulldown, where it says x% finished, it could tell me how many pages (out of total) that translates into? Or how many words, if I've done a word count calculation? (I suppose I could do the math, but I'd have to go back to library view to get the word count.)

As for the slider at the bottom - that serves as a very imprecise way to move around a book, but again, not equivalent to "go to page [or location] x." I like the "tap to go to last position" - but what if I move around a few times and forgot to bookmark my original place? It's not that I couldn't find a way, eg through search or chapter and then page jump, to get back where I was, but if I had an idea what page I had been on, going to that page directly would be much easier. Or if, say, I vaguely remembered that something I was looking for was near a certain page- or even a certain percentage through the book - there's no way now to get there directly. I guess it's just something I've come to think of as standard, and use a lot, in an ereader - like everything, we each use them different ways.

Speaking of bookmarks - can anyone tell me how to make them different colors?
