Why are you complicating things?

Web browser isn't a computer prerogative. Even my really old mobile phone has one.

Or you can take your computer to a friend with another computer. Make a KindleFix party.

It's not a real problem BTW. KindleFix implicitly requires at least one computer to run, right? Is it a real problem? No. And two isn't much bigger than one. So just change word "one" to "two" in requirements.

So you need TWO computers in addition to your kindle? Umm... no thanks!

But then of course, you can run the webserver and browser on the same PC (localhost connection 127.0.0.1).

And AJAX apps are not without problems themselves (but better than in the early LAMP days when I did it, back in the late 90's to about 2001).

Exactly...

Anyways, I've also included python-dialog in KindleFix. I'm looking at the Text installer for Ubuntu, will report back.

I do like the text installer for ubuntu, It does seem to be mostly dialog based....

Still deliberating on the pros and cons of the two...

Added a poll, please vote, I want to see what you think is better...

GUI Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Less getting used to the environment for Windoze users
  • It's pretty

Cons
  • hardware support problems
  • I think it's harder to connect to WiFi from the commandline, (we might need internet if we want to upload a log somewhere...)

TUI Pros and Cons

Pros
  • simple
  • low system requirements

Cons
  • Might be too hard for Windows users to get used to...
  • Accessibility

What about accessibility? Would there be voice-based UI and screeen reader?

What's the reasoning for using SUSE? Is it especially easy to create a custom distribution with it?

I added a gui to the imx_usb using zenity. It's written in bash, and comes with full localization.

You can localize the gui.localizer file.

It wouldn't be too tough to use kdialog or dialog or even xmessage

I just checked the poll... seems like I'm the only one who prefers a text-based one for now (vs. 5 votes for a GUI)

I'm not opposed to a GUI. I'm just warning that a GUI poses many problems that a text-dialog-based installer (analogous to Ubuntu installer) wouldn't have - both in terms of interoperability and developer friendliness. In short: a GUI will be much more complicated to *develop*, while not offering any benefits during *use*. After all, we're talking about a distro whose purpose is to debrick a Kindle, not a 24/7 desktop OS.

But yeah, that's just my 2 cents

As I said, we should ask the user what he wants

Which presumes the user has some personal experience using both types of user interface.

Unfortunately, there is at least one widely distributed operating system whose users have next to zero experience with one of the choices.
Making it a waste of bandwidth to even ask.
