Macmillan Publishing Solutions launches mobile reader service

Macmillan Publishing Solutions (MPS) has launched The Global Reader: a new service that gives consumers access to books, articles, newspapers and other print content on their mobile phone. Mobile internet applications developer Bango has provided its billing and digital fingerprint technologies to MPS for the service. The ability to authenticate users means consumers can assemble a library of free and paid books. Additionally, given some content is lengthy, the mobile site has a bookmark feature. "We never envisioned people would want to read War and Peace on their phones," said Bob Kasher, one of the developers and originators of The Global Reader. "What we responded to was the idea that millions of people have mobile phones in their pockets."

From the blurb above it looked like there would be some newspaper-type content here. I browsed the site a bit and can't find anything noteworthy in the way of news, though.

This is what they wrote about the Global Reader before launch:

Whether content is available in books, magazines, journals, newspapers or even on-line sources currently hidden from the Internet, mobile offers the ability to take content and make it visible, by making it accessible and monetizable.

Global Reader™ will be available from over 75 mobile phone carriers in over 150 countries reaching a potential market of 2.5 billion Mobile Internet enabled phones. Our goal is to eventually become a one-stop shop where you can access the world’s print content via your mobile device to literally allow you to ‘hold the whole world in your hands”. You can reach us by text messaging GLOBAL READER or MPS MOBILE to 53121 or go on your mobile web browser to globalreader.wap.com or mpsmobile.wap.com."
