The works of Patricia Wentworth (1878-1961) are now in the public domain in life+50 countries. As she began writing in 1910, and was quite prolific, a number of her books are also in the public domain in the United States, including this one.

She is best known for her "Miss Silver" detective novels, although these form only about a half of her work. Her earliest novels were well-written historical romances, and she wrote many fairly light-hearted romantic thrillers as well.

This, her second novel, is a romance set against the siege of Cawnpore in India during the "Sepoy Rebellion" of 1857, and unlike most novels with this background, is told from the viewpoint of one of the very few survivors of the appalling massacre at Satichaura Ghat.
