Nun habe ich noch etwas entdeckt das vielleicht von gewissem Interesse sein könnte. Es scheint so zu sein als hätte Bulwer-Lytton in seinem Roman Eugene Aram nicht nur den Lebensgang eines mordenden Philologen gezeichnet, sondern ganz nebenbei auch noch den modernen Ebook-Reader erfunden..

In den 20-er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts gab es mit der Fiske Reading Machine bereits ein aufsehenerregendes mechanisches Lesegerät. (Dank an MobileRead User dwig für den Fund.)

Diese Reading Machine nahm die New York Times dann im Juni 1922 zum Anlass darauf hinzuweisen, dass das alles nichts Neues sei. Denn bereits 1831 schrieb Bulwer-Lytton: »Nay, we forsee the time when a very handsome collection may be carried about in one's waistcoat pocket, and a whole library of the British Classics be neatly arranged in a well-compacted snuffbox.«

In der hier vorliegenden Übersetzung von Friedrich Notter heisst es treffend: »Ja, wir sehen eine Zeit voraus, wo man eine recht hübsche Büchersammlung in der Westentasche mitnehmen und eine ganze Bibliothek der britischen Klassiker zierlich in einer leidlich großen Tabaksdose wird aufstellen können.«

Interessant auch, dass schon Bulwer-Lytton in dem Zitat das baldige Ende des konventionellen Buches prophezeit. Wie lang solche Leichen immer noch rumtorkeln...

Ein interessanter Fund.

Das Prinzip dieser Maschine wurde (und wird noch) tatsächlich verwendet. Nur technisch eine Kleinigkeit anders realisiert. Als Datenträger wird statt Papier Mikrofilm verwendet. Die uns geläufigste Bauform sind die Lesegeräte für Mikrofiche.
