Returning PW replacement questions
I'm returning the replacement I received today, it's a mess. I didn't even register it. For some reason while it has my name on it, it's not actually registered to me under manage your devices. Odd? It gives me a message on the kindle saying "register your kindle".
Do you think it's ok to just return it without registering it and just using the label they gave me for the previous PW? |

It sounds like your replacement might actually be a refurb. |

Yep, that is exactly what I was thinking. The box also didn't come with the get started guide. Thanks for the reply.

Out of curiosity did you do a factory reset earlier? Just curious if that would make it display properly on your Manage My Kindle page. |

BTW, what abnormalities did this replacement come with?
Never mind I just read your post in another thread answering my question. Last edited by jswinden; 10-24-2012 at 05:45 PM. |

I'm calling them about this, I'm pretty annoyed. I'm hoping I can get Kindle US. I always get India and they are obviously even more clueless than the regular Kindle CS regarding the PW. This entire thing is just ridiculous. |

I think I'm going to have to register it before calling them just to avoid confusion. Right now when I type in to contact Amazon Kindle it asks which kindle I'm calling about and I obviously can't choose the one I was sent. Also, when I put in my order number for the replacement I just received the serial number comes up for my current one. Nuts.

Well, I just got off the phone with a "Kindle specialist" At least she was Kindle US. It was a pretty useless phone call with the same old spiel. She told me I could return it with the label I already have so no issue there. I asked her if Amazon is aware of the problems and she said she has never heard about it. I mentioned the reviews on Amazon complaining of the issue and she said they do read them and blah blah blah. Basically she acted like it was unfortunate I got 3 bad units, but she assured me it was an anomaly. Good grief. What can one even say. I mentioned seeing countless pics on forums with the same problem and she said that is only a tiny segment of kindle users. So basically they won't own up to the problem at all. She said she would send me another replacement and she is sure it won't have that issue, but I declined it. This one is really far worse than the one I have currently. She also insisted my kindle was not a refurb, she said they don't have any Kindle Paperwhite refurbs yet. I then asked if I they fixed the issue during the year, if I could get a replacement as it would still be under warranty and her reply was - only if it develops a NEW defect and not the defects you have currently or if the current problem gets worse. Unbelievable really. She also said I'm coming close to the date where I can't get refund (October 2nd) so I should decide quickly. Apparently when you get replacements, they don't go by the date they shipped the replacement for refund, the still go by the date of your original shipment for refund. I was not aware of that. She said that is their policy. I think that's quite unfair which I told her. I might try Best Buy tomorrow and see if I can get one without the specks. After that I guess I have to decide if I can live with my 2nd replacement or if I should just return that one too. All in all, I'm really disappointed with Amazon over this and I also highly doubt this issue is going to be fixed within the year. |

I suspect they will never fix the PW 1st generation, instead they will probably have an earlier than usual release of the 2nd generation late next spring or summer.
One common comment I've seen over and over in multiple forums and threads strikes me as being very interesting. Among those who have requested at least one replacement and then chose to keep one of the PWs they received, almost every one has said something similar to this, "I guess I'll keep #? as it seems to be the least messed up of the lot. It is not that great, but I guess I'll keep it anyway." (Just an observation.) |

As for your second comment, I agree, and I'm on that same crazy train although I go back and forth on it. On principle I feel I should return them both as they both have issues. My problem is I really like the dang thing quite a lot, so I will likely end up keeping the "best" one. I still prefer using it over my Kindle Touch with a clip on light. I was actually all set to keep it and then I noticed the tiny black speck and it put me back on the merry go round. |

Got my 2nd replacement, some dark splotches but better then my other two,so far, I've only had it for and hour and really haven't looked it over real good for specks etc. Still I'm not liking the washed out looking fonts just not enough contrast they look grey not at all e-ink like. I did also notice on this replacement no manual in the box.

Come to think about it, my 2nd replacement came without the Getting Started manual too.

Sorry that new unit is defective as well, Sparkle.
Out of the 5 that did turn on, not all were registered to me either. I think I had to register one or two myself. Also, I think (hope!) that that woman gave you an incorrect answer. No way do you not have 30 days with our replacement. That would be just wrong. I am getting really nervous. Amazon Andrew asked me to just wait until he calls me, but I think I'll try at least one more replacement, in case that woman is right after all. I too can't quit this darn thing. I am in love with the software, but still cringe when I see the green-pink background. There is no overlooking it - no way - no matter what light setting I use. |

Every one of the 6 boxes I received had getting started manuals.
We should have all written down our serial numbers, so we can cross-check for refurbs. We could keep a list here, just leave out a few characters for good measure to prevent scams. |
