Robinson Crusoe?

I am reading this currently. Has anyone read this yet, the unabridged version that is?

It's very heavy going. Mid 18th century literature is not an easy read - at least for me. I have read it, but I can't say that I found it easy going.

As we had this very long thread: 4 Ways High School Makes You Hate Reading (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...php?t=192666):
This was one of the books we had to read in school (in East Germany) when I was a kid. When I remember right we've been around 11/12 years old. But it was a shorter (and of course translated) version. Last year I read the longer book.

Yes, I have read it. It is archaic in its language and writing style and as in just about any writing from that time frame it is over heavy for me in religious references, but it is a good story. I first read it voluntarily as an adult, I imagine I would have been entirely put off it if I had been forced to read it in school.

Actually, it was the favourite "duty" book of many of us. Maybe it helped that the book was translated into contemporary German. And when I re-read the book in English last year I quickly started to wonder how much I had forgotten. But my memory didn't fail me that much, the translation has just been shortened significantly. So, the good adventure story had been kept, but many more boring parts like the religious references were cut out or shortened.

Ahh, yes! I do remember reading that and dreading every word. That was because I read it when I was in my teens. I think that is much to early to be reading books of that nature. If I truly didn't enjoy reading, I would definitely have given it up!

I've not read it, but my dad read the unabridged version to me when I was about 7 years old, a little bit each night. I remember really enjoying it and still remember it quite vividly.

He also read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn to me.

Recently re-read the unabridged Crusoe, quite enjoyed it, but, as all agree, a bit hard going .
However, this drove me to repeat the exercise with "Treasure Island", after some 30 years, and my word, what a cracking yarn, much more to "contemporary" taste.
Enjoyed it hugely, quite refreshing after the Defoe !

Make a great film .........

It has made a great film, with Robert Newton as a glorious Long John Silver.

Still the best kids' book ever written.

My husband and I read it together many years ago and enjoyed it. It was in the top ten of "First Gutenberg books I went for" when I first got an e-reader.
