Not sure how long this will be free, but Old Man Scratch by Rio Youers is currently free @ Amazon. This is a great horror novella, and I highly recommend it!

Link: http://www.amazon.com/Old-Man-Scratc...rds=rio+youers

Here's the book description:

Johnny Gregson moved to the country to enjoy the quiet of his twilight years, but it seems he's got two problems. The first is the roadkill. His neighbour—Hill "Scratch" Clayton—is the second.

Scratch is a hard-edged old man and a creature of habit. He mows his lawn at first light every morning, and the sound of the John Deere's engine always wakes Johnny and his wife from their brittle sleep. Come winter the ride-on mower is replaced by Scratch's snowblower. Johnny tries to reason with him, but Scratch is set in his ways. There is no compassion in his soul.

After Johnny's world is turned upside down, he is compelled to take drastic action. He thinks he knows a way to silence Scratch forever.

For six years he has been scraping dead animals from his driveway and tossing them to the side of the road, and for six years they have disappeared within a day or two. He often asks himself, what happens to the roadkill? Just where does it go?

Old Man Scratch is a revenge story that is often touching, often humorous, but always bound by the unknown . . . the inexplicable fear of what man is capable of, and the darkness of his heart.

Neil Gaiman's Coraline is the Kindle Teens Daily deal from HarperCollins for $1.99.

Quote:
"Coraline discovered the door a little while after they moved into the house. . . ."

When Coraline steps through a door to find another house strangely similar to her own (only better), things seem marvelous.

But there's another mother there, and another father, and they want her to stay and be their little girl. They want to change her and never let her go.

Coraline will have to fight with all her wit and courage if she is to save herself and return to her ordinary life.

Celebrating ten years of Neil Gaiman's first modern classic for young readers, this edition is enriched with a brand-new foreword from the author, a reader's guide, and more.
This is a YA but still pretty creepy:

Quote:
The bag was half filled with large shiny blackbeetles...She carefully picked out a particularly large and black beetle, pulled off its legs (which she dropped, neatly, into a big glass ashtray on the small table beside the sofa), and popped the beetle into her mouth.

Badass Horror is free from Dybbuk Press.

Quote:
This collection of horror stories will slap you in the face, kick you in the teeth and burn cigarette holes in your couch. These stories of pool halls, whiskey, junkies, and angel-tinged lunacy reach to the edge of human endurance and push all the harder. A detective wakes up in a shallow grave with a bullet hole in his chest and a taste for brains. A drug dealer tortures the privileged. A whorehouse keeps a strange "pet" and a man discovers the secret to all human passion. These seven stories, written by some of the best writers of modern fiction including Garry Kilworth, Ron Damien Malfi, Michael Boatman and Michael Hemmingson, will dull the pain of the hole that Hubert Selby jr.'s death left in your nasty bitter heart.

Two more Robert W. Walker freebies:

Zombie Eyes (Bloodscreams #3)

Quote:
A LEGION OF THE DEAD...

It starts with a sacred crypt, dug centuries ago, discovered under Manhattan. Buried with it is a diabolical creature spreading a strange contagion, claiming its victims by the thousands. But the dead aren't staying dead for long... and only one man is qualified to brave the unstoppable zombie army.

...IN A CITY OF THE DAMNED

Psychic detective Abraham Stroud knows the origin of what festers in the unholy pit. And only he can battle the primeval horror as it prepares mankind for the ultimate sacrifice.
Hand-To-Hand (Decoy Series #4)

Quote:
TWISTED GENIUS...

He likes hands. He likes their comfortable shape and weight and size.He likes the portability of the hands once they are severed from the rest of the ponderous body. He might carry them in his coat pocket, carry them to where he works, to the cafe, the park. But really, The Handyman isn't a selfish sort, the hands are for someone else, someone without proper hands of their own. And besides, the "donors" never felt any pain, they barely even bled. The Handyman had worked out every detail.

Chicago Police Detective Ryne Lanark figured out the handless corpse probably deserved what he got, that he had violated some sacred code. When a second handless body was found, Lanark knew there would be more, that the slaughter was just beginning. Forensics warned him that the killer was brilliant-amazingly,the victims died of heart attack, not blood loss.

As the body count rises, lunatics from all over Chicago begin confessing to the murders. Then, a woman claiming to have escaped The Handyman comes forward. Her description is too precise to be faked. She could be the key to the whole case... or bait set by the Handyman. Either way, Lanark will meet The Handyman... alone.

Thanks, NightBird for the Walker titles.

I already had one of them, so I decided to mercifully avoid the second one.

LOL.

Subterranean is offering a free story by Robert McCammon from The Hunter from the Woods from their website in Mobi or Epub formats -

The Sea Chase. (Download links near bottom of page.)

Quote:
The Hunter from the Woods marks the much-anticipated return of Michael Gallatin, the lycanthropic hero of Robert McCammon’s 1989 classic, The Wolf’s Hour. These all-new, interlinked stories offer a full measure of McCammon’s trademark narrative excitement, and comprise a fascinating composite portrait of a unique fictional creation.

The volume opens with a pair of brief glimpses into Michael’s early life in Russia and his initial recruitment into the British Secret Service. It ends with a haunting vision of the werewolf at twilight. In between, McCammon gives us three stellar novellas depicting different phases of Michael’s long, brutal war against Nazi Germany. “Sea Chase” is a nautical tale about the hazards of transporting a defecting German scientist to a place of sanctuary in England. “The Wolf and the Eagle” is the account of an unlikely friendship between rival “men of action” and a harrowing portrayal of a lethal forced march through the North African desert. “The Room at the Bottom of the Stairs” tells of an impossible, ultimately tragic love affair set in the embattled city of Berlin during the latter stages of the war.

Erotic, visceral, and filled with moments of desolating horror and unexpected warmth, The Hunter from the Woods is a triumph of imaginative storytelling. Like the best of McCammon’s earlier work, it offers intelligent, world-class entertainment. In the process, it shines a welcome new light on one of the most uncommon heroes in contemporary fiction.

Audrey's Door by Sarah Langan is free from HarperCollins.

Kobo

Quote:
Built on the Upper West Side, the elegant Breviary claims a regal history. But despite 14B's astonishingly low rental price, the recent tragedy within its walls has frightened away all potential tenants . . . except for Audrey Lucas.

No stranger to tragedy at thirty-two—a survivor of a fatherless childhood and a mother's hopeless dementia— Audrey is obsessively determined to make her own way in a city that often strangles the weak. But is it something otherworldly or Audrey's own increasing instability that's to blame for the dark visions that haunt her . . . and for the voice that demands that she build a door? A door it would be true madness to open .
Two of her other books are $.99 each:

The Missing

Kobo

B&N

Quote:
A remote and affluent Maine community, Corpus Christi was untouched by the environmental catastrophe that destroyed the neighboring blue-collar town of Bedford. But all that will change in a heartbeat . . .

The nightmare is awakened when third-grade schoolteacher Lois Larkin takes the children on a field trip to Bedford. There in the abandoned woods, a small, cruel boy unearths an ancient horror—a contagious plague that transforms its victims into something violent, hungry . . . and inhuman.

The long, dark night is just beginning. And all hope must die as the contagion feeds—for the malevolence will not rest until it has devoured every living soul in Corpus Christi . . . and beyond.

The Keeper

Kobo

B&N

Quote:
Some believe Bedford, Maine, is cursed. Its bloody past, endless rain, and the decay of its downtown portend a hopeless future. With the death of its paper mill, Bedford's unemployed residents soon find themselves with far too much time to dwell on thoughts of Susan Marley. Once the local beauty, she's now the local whore. Silently prowling the muddy streets, she watches eerily from the shadows, waiting for . . . something. And haunting the sleep of everyone in town with monstrous visions of violence and horror.

Those who are able will leave Bedford before the darkness fully ascends. But those who are trapped here—from Susan Marley's long-suffering mother and younger sister to her guilt-ridden, alcoholic ex-lover to the destitute and faithless with nowhere else to go—will soon know the fullest and most terrible meaning of nightmare.

I've read these two. Langan is a very good writer, but her choice of material is not at all to my liking--lots of really disgusting detail that is more stomach-turning than scary.
