3G connectivity practical uses today (2012/2013)?

iRex is gone, its contracts with Verizon and B&N are gone, but my DR800SGs still have slots for SIM cards...

has anyone gotten round to using the DR 3G connectivity for something useful (or at all)? I promise I've been looking around but I just couldn't find anything. Any links, please?

As said in other threads before, it would be indeed great to be able to stick in a working SIM card and control it in some way ... far beyond me unfortunately.
