What is more galling is that it isn't the world's thinnest smartphone, though that comment during the presentation and in the Apple news release has been picked up by the sloppier journalists and is spreading.

I note that on Apple's product page they only claim it as the thinnest iPhone yet, at its 7.6mm.

Thinner phones:

According Strategy Analytics there are at least three smart phones that are thinner than the iPhone at 7.6mm and they are the 7.1mm thick, the Motorola RAZR XT909, Motorola Droid RAZR and Motorola RAZR XT910.

However the world’s skinniest, slimmest, thinnest smartphone is in fact The Huawei Ascend P1 S was unveiled at t CES in January and measures 6.68mm with HSPA+ connection. Not only that it is more colorful than the iPhone 5 and comes in cherry blossom pink, white and black.him
There's also the Oppo Finder at 6.65mm, and the Fujutsu Arrows at 6.7mm.

They said a lot of nonsense at that conference. Do Apple even know what the definition of innovation is.

The journalists are running so fast trying to be the first to break the news to the public that they don't have time for basic editing. You can't expect them to waste time on fact checking. From the article in the OP:

Quote:
HTC, another smartphone manufacturer, Apple locked horns with won a court battle pertaining to the LTE, and here the report adds that it does bring in “the possibility that Samsung's bet will fully pay off.”

They're picking up on the 'not the thinnest' meme now, though there's some argument over whether you should include the camera bulge on some of the phones.

The camera on the Motorolas does stick out another few mm, but the Oppo Finder does genuinely appear to be 6.65 mm including the camera. See this YouTube video:

The memes that I've seen were concerned with the other dimensions of the phone, not the thickness.

As Gruber said about the Amazon event:

Quote:
To understand the brilliance of Amazon’s and Bezos’s positioning, you need to consider the audience. The mass market is not going to watch his presentation. As I type this, YouTube claims the video has been watched just over 92,000 times — a decent number, but only a sliver compared to Amazon’s customer base.1 The audience was the tech press. This is how the information filters out: Amazon holds a product introduction event; the media writes and talks about it.
...and while we techheads now know there are thinner phones, all brett the weight lifter and susie the yogi know is what they saw on cnn at the gym: worlds thinnest phone.

Marketing trick accomplished. They'll never check back in at Android Police.com to confirm it.

Is that the only way to sell a phone? Is that what their market has proven to want?

Apples recipe is different from Samsungs. And HTC. It works too.

Apple has been doing this bovine excrement since the nineties. They have been one of the major drivers of the litigative culture that has developed in electronics, and I have zero problems with any consequence they ever get. Microsoft too.

Like I said I really respected their maverick and innovative nature back in the 80s which is around when they were involved with ARM. Apple wanted the processor for their Newton, which was an innovation well ahead of it's time. ARM was officially incorporated in 1990 and Apple began to lose it's technologically innovative nature sometime during the 90s time period.

NFC was likely left out so that they would have something to present as new in the 5s.
