The journalists are running so fast trying to be the first to break the news to the public that they don't have time for basic editing. You can't expect them to waste time on fact checking. From the article in the OP:

They're picking up on the 'not the thinnest' meme now, though there's some argument over whether you should include the camera bulge on some of the phones.

The camera on the Motorolas does stick out another few mm, but the Oppo Finder does genuinely appear to be 6.65 mm including the camera. See this YouTube video:

The memes that I've seen were concerned with the other dimensions of the phone, not the thickness.

Like I said I really respected their maverick and innovative nature back in the 80s which is around when they were involved with ARM. Apple wanted the processor for their Newton, which was an innovation well ahead of it's time. ARM was officially incorporated in 1990 and Apple began to lose it's technologically innovative nature sometime during the 90s time period.

NFC was likely left out so that they would have something to present as new in the 5s.
