What is a great love of books? It is something like a personal introduction to the great and good men of all past times. Books, it is true, are silent as you see them on their shelves; but, silent as they are, when I enter a library I feel as if almost the dead were present, and I know if I put questions to these books they will answer me with all the faithfulness and fulness which has been left in them by the great men who have left the books with us. - John Bright |

Keep in mind that I treat my Kindles (K3 & K4) like paperbacks and read strictly for entertainment. I open a book and read. I don't use the dictionary, highlighting, bookmarks, notes, different fonts, etc. I also don't use calibre. If Amazon wants to get me excited, then they'd use folders for organizing content. That, I'd find truly useful. Otherwise, ...meh. |

I don't think Sigil handles KF8 files. You would probably have to convert to epub, edit and then reconvert to KF8. Not really worth the effort in my opinion.

KindleGen then?
I don't edit my content so I'm fairly clueless.

Good golly, Miss Molly. I'm behind the times. Glad you posted that.

Nope. Kindlegen still needs an epub, htm, or html file. I may play around with conversion just to see if it's *possible*. Still probably not worth the effort unless you're especially anal.

On another note, I got my first KF8 and on my 3.4 enabled reader it looks just plain awful. Awful line spacing, the drop caps look terrible, the fonts spindly and the file is HUGE!

Isn't the whole point of KF8 to give creators the freedom to make things truly awful?

It sounds like you might be rolling your own KF8 with kindlegen or kindle previewer? in which case the file contains mobi, kf8, and source, and will be roughly 3x larger. There is a python script here (mobi forum) that will extract just the KF8. KF8 is not significantly larger than equivalent mobi in general. KF8 files delivered by Amazon only contain the KF8 segment. I haven't played with calibre's conversion to KF8, it may not have this problem. There is also an issue with KDP when some Word docs are submitted for conversion (unless that has been fixed). Looks okay in previewer and on Fire but on KT text is tiny. "Wool Omnibus Edition" for example. Len Edgerley (Kindle Chronicles podcast) had this happen to a book he submitted. |

Yes, that option is there (and needed!) on the K3 for the KF8 files I've looked at since updating.

Not surprising if the original KF8 file contained embedded fonts. The MOBI would, of course, omit the fonts as it would be the older "classic" MOBI. The EPUB likely contains the fonts and hence is rather large.
