The correct word you want so nobody else misunderstands is latest instead of last. The way last was used, it reads like definition #5.

I'll have to side with Jon on this one. There's no way that "last adventure" could mean anything other than "final adventure." If you said "latest adventure," that would be fine.

It depends on context, surely?

If I were to be asked a question about the books and answered, "Oh, that happened in the last book", that could quite reasonably be read as the 'latest' one. I agree, though, that 'latest' would have been a much better choice of word in the OP.

I have read the book. There is nothing in it to explicitly suggest it is the final book in the Reacher series.

I read a review the other day when I was looking to try to find out if it was the last of the series and from the review, it sounded like it wasn't.
