This is encouraging. The more companies invest in the manifold applications of electro-fluoretic displays, the cheaper they may all become. A $50-$100 e-book device may not be so far away. Plus, anywhere we can have more efficient displays calms my inner hippie.

Yeah, but my only concern if whether Samsung has the staying power in this new market. I have a Samsung Nexio S160 since 2004 that still can give the latest PDAs/UMPCs a run for their money. But Samsung never released the follow-on version, the XP40 (which appeared at CeBIT) - citing as lack of a market.

Samsung Syncpaper - next e-book reader?

The guys from Engadget report that Samsung Electronics filed a trademark on "SyncPaper" in relation to "electronic ink display devices; computers; MP3 players; mobile telephones; DMB receivers" and more.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/15/s...er-on-the-way/

Sounds intriguing!

There are many unknown vicissitudes for why a company drops a product or slugs it out. I wish to take the optimistic view here, hoping that Samsung will strike it big with the other technology mentioned in the article. Watches, clocks, those are all excellent candidates for an update from LCD to e-ink.
