Kindles released early?

... and the day before the Paperwhite Kindle ships I'm heading overseas for 3 months. Typical. But I vaguely remember that kindles in the past have shipped early. Does anyone remember that too or am I making it up and clutching at straws?

Last year the Kindle Fire was scheduled to ship on November 15. Mine shipped on November 14 and I got it on the 15th. Only one day early, but still....

I don't recall them ever arriving before the release date. My K2 arrived on the release date. K3 and Touch I believe both arrived the day after the release date. However, hope springs eternal.

The Paperwhite is scheduled to ship October 15, with estimated arrival of October 16 to October 28 (for my orders).

USPS First Class Mail International from the USA to various countries is between $11 and $14 (for the ones I need), if you wrap and reship the original kindle box (to cover any labels and barcodes).

Amazon will not (yet) ship the Paperwhite outside of the USA.

I wouldn't count on it arriving before you leave. Hopefully someone will be there to get it for you, otherwise, I would cancel my order and reorder when you get back.

I had my original K3 delivered the day before the official launch day. I don't know if that's something that will happen this time. We shall see.

thanks guys. hope springs eternal for sure. i googled and found that the kindle touch shipped a week early and the fire a couple of days. so there may be some hope. but, as someone suggested, i need someone TRUSTWORTHY to pick it up and resend it.

USPS doesn't ship items with lithium batteries internationally anymore, it'd need to be UPS, DHL, or FedEx.

The very knowledgeable USPS representative I talked to told me it is up to my local postmaster regarding personal shipment of devices with non-removable batteries. They said it should be fine if the right forms are filled out correctly. And they said shipping is not the problem, but whether the receiving country accepts the shipment (which seems strange because returning it means shipping it twice)!

The kindles are just appliances with electronic components inside. It does not say anywhere on the kindle device or on the package that it contains a lithium battery. I was also told that USPS does ship lithium batteries internationally when sent from the manufacturer. The law is about to change to allow personal shipments containing lithium batteries anyway.

There is a rumor that shipments were temporarily "paused" between May 2012 and January 2013 due to the Olympics. [You can give credit/blame to Shopaholic for this juicy tidbit.]

And regarding your link, did you notice that it contains the following exemption, which seems to apply to kindles?

b. Installed In Equipment. The following additional restrictions apply to the mailing of primary cells or batteries properly installed in the equipment they operate:
1. The batteries installed in the equipment must be protected from damage and short circuit.
2. The equipment must be equipped with an effective means of preventing it from being turned on or activated.
3. The equipment must be cushioned to prevent movement or damage and be contained in a strong enough sealed package to prevent crushing of the package or exposure of the contents during normal handling in the mail.
4. The mailpiece must not exceed 11 pounds.

Thanks for the info. I just remembered all the hoopla when it was announced that they weren't going to allow it, hadn't actually looked into it in depth.

Wow! I'm flattered. I didn't realize I started a rumor. lol It was a conversation I had with my hubby back in May wondering why in April 2012 it was ok to ship but not between May to January that I posted in thread on selling a Kindle 3.

I'd hardly call it a rumor. It was merely speculation on my part that I just threw out there wondering why.
