Quick everyone, announce stuff before Apple does!

It’s that season again. The season when everyone rushes to announce products and ‘innovations’ before Apple drops their latest iPhone and iOS software on the market, obliterating alternative coverage for weeks. This year is tightly packed, with 7 events in roughly three weeks so far, and still time for more to pop onto the schedule.

• August 29 – Samsung’s Unpacked Event
  
• September 5th – Nokia and Microsoft’s Windows Phone Event
  
• September 5th and 6th – Nokia World
  
• September 5th – Google/Motorola Mobility’s On Display Event
  
• September 6th – Amazon Press Conference

its called announcing for the fall/holiday season. its the same reason Apple schedules stuff at this time of the year(August/September onward) and the same reason EVERYONE's product cycle has resulted in new things being launched from August onward for... generations/decades/last century.

Yes, companies release stuff in the fall, but there's a reason they picked the days they did. And that reason is Apple.

Actually, they could've gotten the price below $300 if they'd used an SE/30 motherboard in the original specification instead of a Classic II. The older board was better designed and had a slot that could've provided both a color graphics adapter and a modem card.

Sometimes newer tech ain't always better.

Being great at a few things doesn't make a company good at everything. Sony made the mistake of trying to do far too much -- music and film production and publishing *as well as* the hardware used to play the media -- whereas Jobs knew enough to keep his content -- Pixar -- separate from his hardware/software-integrated company.

Jobs was great at what he did best, but he was too authoritarian in his individualism to understand gaming communities and too rigid in his competitiveness to embrace the euphoric chaos of the art form itself.

The Pippin, the Newton and Apple TV have failed, but that's fine -- companies should try not to stagnate. Samsung and Asus do the same thing, but their product lines are a blur and fewer people notice.

(OT: I happen to love the PSP Vita's controls.)

Let's be clear: We don't actually know if Apple is even working on a smaller iPad. All we have to go on are reports from anonymous sources and leaked parts which are allegedly intended for this tablet. There's currently no official word from Apple confirming the existence of the iPad Mini. But where there's smoke, there's occasionally a fire.

Tech blogger/Apple watcher John Gruber — who has a good track record when it comes to reasoning out details — seems convinced that the smaller tablet is coming, but not until October.

"I don’t think Apple would want reviews of both a new iPhone and new-size iPad appearing at the same time," Gruber writes. "The iPhone is too big, too cool, and garners too much attention — and it’s in Apple’s interest to keep that attention undiluted."
