Why Women Own More Than One Pair of Shoes

This is a story from Surviving the Fog-Kathy's Recollections

Copyright 2012
Gorba’s Moccasins
By Stan Morris

It was all Sang Moon’s fault. We all wore pretty much the same moccasins until he ruined it all, and we were contented until he spoiled things. Some of the guys like to blame Gorba, but she never would have known the difference if it hadn’t been for Sang Moon. He’s the guilty party.

Gorba was prettier than most of the girls in our cave. She had big black eyes that were almost straight and smooth oily hair. You could tell from the size of her bottom, she would be a good child producer. A man could do a lot worse than Gorba. Certainly, Sang Moon thought so.

Other guys in our tribe liked her too, but she was bidding her time, holding out to see who would be a good provider. Some of the boys would bring her pretty stones that they had found in the creek bed, and others bought her a hunk of meat from a juicy rabbit or maybe a pheasant.

Sang Moon’s problem was that he wasn’t a particularly good hunter. While others were catching a tender dove, he was more likely to bring in one of those scrawny birds that scratched out a living among the rocks, where they could hide from the big rats. 'Chickens' we called them. The only thing he could really catch was rabbits, because he was good at making rabbit snares. Hunting and killing a deer was completely beyond him.
