@cryzed: If you're on 5.3.0, yes: the account is locked, so the password doesn't even enter the equation there .

Auth via shared keys (or switch to OpenSSH, I'll admit to never having checked how dropbear behaved on 5.3.0 without the hacked auth (which is disabled when WiFi is enabled) when not using shared keys).

EDIT: Well, I don't think I checked OpenSSH auth via password either, can't remember now...
One thing's for certain: It works via shared keys on both dropbear & OpenSSH, it works via password on dropbear when wifi is disabled.

Thank you, that explains it. NiLuJe do you know by chance why the ncat/dd partition backup still won't work when connected over the USB/NDIS interface? (See my previous post mentioned that I still have problems with that). I know that it is technically not important... but it really irks me. I didn't try yet with the WiFi interface but it's really strange IMHO.

I forget if that is everything but it's enough to get you close.

@cryzed: Besides what everyone already said, no.

Check the IP used on both sides, check that there isn't a nasty router/firewall messing stuff up, check the netcat version bundled in Cygwin (for the -p thing), that's pretty much it .

I have a friend who has faffed around trying to get that working under slackware for WEEKS. everytime I visit we have another go. damn thing just REFUSES to play ball over usbnet. (Slackware 13.1 13.37 and 14.0?(1)? now all do same under blackbox window manager, I have tested the device on a windows laptop and it works fine)

So moral of that story, test on as many platforms as you can. Slackware + Blackbox = nightmare. for example.

: ) HTH

EDIT: Oh. The last time I was there we finally got it to work over wifi.

I should explain that this guy has more security than a bank. virtual gateways on multiple interface cards, dual firewalls and passwords that make your eyes bleed. Hidden AP, Sandbox, Root required for all things useful but root login denied to everything but the most obscure route and services ported to non-standard ports... OMG I could go on.. if you can think of some security thing? he has it.

So yeah... not your standard install. But it works via wifi fine now (we added the relevant holes in the black ice at last )

Thanks twobob, NiLuJe, geekmaster, knc1 -- I really appreciated your help and pretty much got my working Kindle setup now ! The netcat/dd stuff works without problems over the WLAN funnily, so I guess I'll just be happy about that -- still puzzled about the NDIS/USB though. Also thank you twobob for the private/public key pair instructions, luckily I already had one which I used for my old VPS and Bitbucket/Github accounts, so I just pasted the public key part into the authorized_keys file while I had the USB mode activated and the connected via SSH to the Kindle !

Am I mistaken in assuming that it is not possible to enable USB mode and SSH access at the same time? So that I can easily drag and drop files onto the Kindle via the USB connection and connect to the root shell per SSH whenever I feel like it?

EDIT: Just disable USE_WIFI_SSHD_ONLY probably, right? I'll check it.
EDIT2: Yep, thanks.
EDIT3: Well partly: the SSH connection freezes while it's in the USB mode, but it's better than nothing.

it depends on your setup.

I can just use some of my kindles like they are part of my file system.
(pictured "us" link in left hand column of links)
Used Nautilus to do that.

Also Winscp setup correctly in Linux provides a very handy realtime bridge.

TBH. I don't use the USB mode much. Why would you? you can inject documents, refresh the index, all on the fly.

and Winscp makes viewing anything on the device on the PC a breeze also.

Mine now invokes Notepad ++ in Wine in Linux Mint which is just awesome.

and when I save. Winscp pushes it back to the device for me transparently.

Err. yeah. excellent.

Heh, that's awesome! Nice idea, I agree -- but I want the USB mode so my Calibre instance + FanFictionDownloader plugin etc. works correctly and transparently, but I see your point, I could probably download some kind of SCP support for Windows and then, just like you do, transparently access the user storage when I authenticate with my key pairs.

Hrm, now the big decision, enable auto or not. It shouldn't really harm me, even if something goes wrong I should still be able to access it over USB...

EDIT: Everything works, beautiful!

I never enabled auto.

I simply push the switch via other means.

normally a simple

SHIFT T T (wait) usbn Menu+z (enter) "Left Top Page Back Button"

Does the job on the 3.
That's plenty fast.

Assuming you use launchpad and Myts (with the juicy big fonts ) but why the hack wouldnt you? Dunno about a 4. haven't got one

Yes, I am considering auto because it possibly allows me to debrick my Kindle if something goes wrong, next to the ENABLE_DIAGS trick (if under some circumstance I can't access the USB storage during the boot process I could still theoretically connect via SSH and debrick it then).

Well let's just hope that the OpenSSH instance is not power hungry and I got myself a perfectly working Kindle setup . Thanks again.

This is a good point. however launchpad (if we are talking about the 3) jumps in pretty early and can often be launched an a deadish 3 to invoke myts.

If we are talking about the 4. I will shut up : D

I am talking about my Kindle Paperwhite, so technically a 5? Is that what you mean? You probably mean the 4th generation, so yeah 4 !

@cryzed: Nope, it's an either/or situation, UMS or ETHoUSB . (Although, technically, IIRC, there is a 'composite' Linux gadget driver, which can handle (all? some, at least) the different gadgets concurrently. I don't think anyone ever bothered porting it & implementing this on a Kindle, though).

But, like twobob said, there are a wide range of tricks available to somewhat transparently access it as a proper volume while in usbnet mode. sshfs on Linux, for example .

And, yeah, OpenSSH/dropbear pretty much just sits there mostly doing nothing, so, no worry on the power drain there .

@twobob: cryzed has a PW, so, no kite/lp . Fortunately, the debug command is far more easily accessible on those things .

Yep, got the following setup now: Enabled WiFi/Ethernet over USB using OpenSSH with a public/private keypair set to auto-start. Now usually I don't require the SSH access, so I just turn it off with ;un. If my Kindle decides to turn into a brick I can now simply restart the Kindle and the WiFi/Ethernet over USB possibilities + ENABLE_DIAGS are at my disposal to save the system.
