Description:

When the Sixth Swarm of the insectoid dronons began their invasion of human worlds, three fugitives were thrown together as they fled before the wave of alien destruction. Gallen O'Day, a human bounty hunter, Orick, a sentient bear, and Maggie Flynn, a beautiful orphan, made a desperate stand. In an attempt to stop the attack, they challenged the queen of the invading forces. Against all hope, Gallen defeated the Dronon Lord protector in ritual combat, piercing its exoskeleton. Only an ancient system of transport gates has kept the desperate trio one world ahead of the Dronon probes and scout ships. But now, out of worlds and out of hope, they are stranded on a planet called Ruin, far beyond the gates and off the star charts.

Editorial Reviews:

"David Farland's Golden Queen trilogy is . . . the equivalent of Lord of the Rings in space. It begins small, as a seemingly insignificant character gets caught up in the affairs of dangerous, evil beings that threaten everything good about human life. Then with twists and turns that left me gasping, Farland launches us into space to do things that at the beginning of the book we couldn't have dreamed of. . . .Farland is simply one of the best sci-fi and fantasy writers alive."
-Orson Scott Card, Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award Winner

"David Farland can dispense the flash and dazzle of space opera while at the same time providing tough, real, sympathetic characters. . . . I enjoyed the Golden Queen with a very special pleasure."-- Hugo and Nebula Winner Roger Zelazny.

"Fans should get a charge out of the continuing adrenaline-packed adventures of the ever charming Gallen, Maggie, and Orick, the talking bear." - Publisher's Weekly

"When you want to slap a character for her naïve arrogance on one page and comfort her on the next, you know you've found a writer with a gift for characterization. [David Farland] has that gift. He also writes a neatly plotted novel that combines the swashbuckling action with hi-tech SF. . . . This is an enjoyable story. Recommended." --Starlog Magazine

"A rainbow mixture of technology and mythology, filled with vibrant colors, larger-than-life heroes, and thunderous action. --International bestselling Author Kevin J. Anderson

About the Author:

Thanks for this - now have the full set. Hopefully they'll fix the editing issues and re-release it soon. Now I have the full trilogy I'm planning to start reading them.

--The Golden Queen - Book #1 of the Golden Queen Series - David Farland (Dave Wolverton)

--This book was originally published in 1994 by Tor (Under the name Dave Wolverton)

Quote:
Book Description:

When Gallen O’Day is hired to as a bodyguard to escort a young woman through the woods to the forbidden ruins at Geata Na Chruinn, it seems like an ordinary job—but all too soon, he finds himself fleeing for his life from creatures that seem like escapees from a nightmare—the alien dronon, led by their golden queen. With his best friend, a genetically engineered talking bear named Orick, and his girlfriend Maggie, Gallen soon finds himself tangled in an interstellar war that he never knew existed, racing across a host of worlds, confronted by a future unlike any that he had ever imagined.

Originally published under the name of Dave Wolverton.

Editorial Reviews:

From Publishers Weekly:

Though billed as science fiction, the latest novel by the author of this summer's Star Wars yarn ( The Courtship of Princess Leia ) reads more like fantasy. Gallen O'Day lives on a backward planet where he works as a bodyguard along with his friend, the genetically enhanced talking bear, Orick. They and Maggie Flynn, Gallen's girlfriend, are whisked into the middle of an intergalactic intrigue by two strangers, the Lady Everynne and her protector, Veriasse. Everynne is a clone designed as the perfect human, beautiful beyond compare and so good that she wishes only to serve the best interests of our species. At this time, humanity has been conquered by the Dronon, an insect-like race controlled by a hive mentality and ruled by a Golden Queen. The Dronon want to genetically reengineer humanity along insect-like lines, a fate that Everynne and her escorts try to deter by challenging the Golden Queen's protector in battle. The story features many charming moments; especially appealing is the talking bear, who retains his ursine nature while still yearning to become a Christian priest. On the other hand, there's little depth or moral force to the losses the characters suffer. Wolverton is obviously trying to gain SF legitimacy (his discussions of genetic research go on for pages), but he relies on fantasy fundamentals time and again, including a standard quest format, stereotypical characterizations and a predictably happy ending. Yet the legions of Star Wars fans will probably devour this mix of familiar themes, archetypal characters and moderately interesting alien technologies. Major ad/promo.

From Kirkus Reviews:

From the author of the recent Star Wars yarn The Courtship of Princess Leia (p.254), a hybrid sword/science-fiction space opera set in a far future where humans, having spread through the galaxy, are now threatened by invading insectoid dronons who have killed Semaritte, the human ruler, and taken over her planet-size computer. So Semaritte's wise and ancient Lord Escort, Veriasse, has cloned Semaritte and plans to challenge the dronon Golden Queen's Lord Escort in battle according to the dronons' own code. If Veriasse wins, Everynne, the charismatic clone, will recover Semaritte's powers. On Tihrglas, an Irish-flavored planet deliberately shielded from the superscience prevalent elsewhere, Everynne acquires some helpers: warrior Gallen O'Day, his girlfriend Maggie, and Orick the talking bear. Pursued by ``vanquishers'' and other fearsome creatures, they leap from planet to planet via Gates opened with Keys, enduring perils at every turn, until a final showdown decides the fate of the galaxy. Sound familiar? Well, despite Wolverton's contorted superscience, feeble plotting, and jerry-built prose, fans of his Star Wars outing will probably wish to investigate. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP.
