The publishers basically guaranteed an Amazon monopoly of ebooks when they required Amazon to sell DRM'd ebooks and allowed Amazon to choose their own format and ereader implementation that prevented any other retailer from selling DRM'd ebooks in the Kindle format. I'm sure that even if Kindle owners could by their books from other retailers, most probably wouldn't bother because of the ease of downloads from the Amazon cloud which can't be duplicated by other retailers.
