It should also be noted that no modding, soft or hard, has been done to the Kindle.
You've cracked the screen - it's as simple as that. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with firmware. There is a thin layer of glass, called the "screen substrate", below the outer plastic screen. If you subject your Kindle to any kind of twisting or bending force, you WILL fracture this glass layer, and that's exactly what's happening here. If you're fracturing the screen substrate on a regular basis you REALLY need to treat your Kindle with more respect. This isn't covered by warranty - if it was any other supplier than Amazon you'd be buying a lot of new readers.

Friend, I'm trying to help you, whether you realise it or not. You are breaking the screen of your Kindle - it really is that simple. What you need to discover is HOW you're breaking the screen. Trying to blame it on the firmware is not going to solve anything. That's my advice. Take it or leave it.

There's no "recall" on the Kindle keyboard. In fact my wife, 2 sisters and brother have all had theirs for over 2 years with no issues, all running firmware 3.1 right now.

You're being excessively cautious there. There is no way that a firmware update could result in a cracked screen. It's definitely not the cause.

Precisely. A broken substrate is caused by physical damage to the Kindle.

Although a firmware update *COULD* cause a broken screen if the user has anger-management issues (such as an adverse reaction to the new "airplane mode" on some firmware updates).

Wow, how did you manage that? I'd think it's long out of warranty.

Don't know. I was just lucky, I suppose.

Not only was it out of warranty, but I had even bought it from a different Amazon national subsidiary.

Plus, they even offered to refund my postage costs for the return of the old one (but I felt it would be a bit churlish to insist on that, so I didn't follow it up).
