Replace books instead of adding them as duplicates?

Is there a way to simply replace a book already in the library instead of adding it as a duplicate?

Take a look at the 'Automerge' setting under the 'Adding Books' section of the preferences. There's three different settings for dealing with duplicates. Just note that calibre first has to know it's a duplicate ... which is easier said than done if the title in the metadata isn't identical.

Also don't forget if that if you are just doing a single book you can select it in your library and then drag/drop onto the book details panel, or open the Edit Metadata dialog and drag/drop onto the Formats part of it. That way you don't have to worry about the metadata matching.

If there already are duplicates, is there a way I can merge them?

I'm using Calibre to make kindle-readable sets of recipes. Which means that each time I add, say, cranberry sauce or oatmeal cookies recipes to a file, I redo the "book," and replace the one already on my Kindle keyboard. Given that the machine also has about 200 books I've bought or downloaded from gutenberg.org , I'd rather add as few recipe files as possible.
