Prévost, Antoine François (Abbé): Manon Lescaut. v1. 4 July 2012
Manon Lescaut was controversial in its time and was banned in France upon publication. Despite this it became very popular and pirated editions were widely distributed. In the 1753 edition, the Abbé Prévost toned down some scandalous details and injected more moralizing disclaimers.
The story is set in France and Louisiana in the early 18th century, and follows the hero le Chevalier Des Grieux and his lover Manon Lescaut. Des Grieux comes from a noble and landed family, but forfeits his hereditary wealth and disappointments his father by running away with Manon. He was 17 and she 16. In Paris the young lovers enjoy a blissful life together, while Des Grieux struggles to satisfy Manon's taste for luxury by borrowing from his unwaveringly loyal friend Tiberge and by cheating gamblers. On several occasions after Des Grieux's wealth evaporates through misadventures Manon leaves him for a richer man because she cannot bear the thought of living in penury. They are sent to prison, escape, and are recaptured. Eventually she is transported to Louisiana, and he takes passage on the same ship.
The two lovers settle in New Orleans and live in idyllic peace for a while. But after Des Grieux reveals their unmarried state to the Governor and asks to marry Manon the Governor gives Manon to his nephew. Des Grieux challenges the nephew to a duel and wounds him. The couple flee New Orleans and venture into the wilderness of Louisiana, hoping to reach a neighboring English settlement. Manon dies of exposure, and after burying her Des Grieux returns to France to become a cleric.
