For some kindles, the GND connection on the serial port has been a problem.
Try an extra ground connection. For example, keep the USB cable connected between the Kindle and the host PC that has the serial adapter connected to it. |

In the spirit of "Replace each piece you can to confirm it is not the issue" My only thoughts. Didn't I read hyperterminal could do the job somewhere? Should read up on this I suppose. Anyways, In the event of bugger all else to test I would try that. |

1) Check your terminal configuration, should be: 115200, 8N1
