Wexler's Flex One Reader: Flexible, durable screen (video)

http://www.e-ink-info.com/wexlers-fl...shipping-video

This looks like a real advance in e-ink readers, improving their durability. Here's hoping this tech gets released beyond China soon.

That's pretty cool. This would be perfect for schools.

From the link:

The major downsize is that the resolution and speed of a plastic-based display is not as good as a glass based one.
What am I missing here??? How is 1024x768 worse than the current 800x600?

Most of the glass ones are actually higher than that, just other things limit for lower resolution.

I agree, the resolution is better than almost all current 6" EInk screens. The page turn speed also did not seem slow in the video. 110 g is very light, the Kindle 4 is 170 g.

I don't think e-ink is the right technology for schools. LCDs offer a lot more in terms of interactivity and multimedia.

It costs more than glass. Not a plus for schools.

As for the drop demo, I've done worse to my k4nt and fire without consequence.

It's interesting technology, but not compelling.

Perhaps they mean "worse than LCD displays".

LCDs break and cost much more. A flex display is only 10-15% more expensive than a glass eInk display, but that cost is easily offset by not having to replace broken devices.

Kindles sent to Ghana in a pilot study by Worldreader suffered a 40% breakage rate. What broke? The glass display of course. So, who'll pay for the replacements?

The sentiment was laudable, but the technology was too early to implement. Now comes a flex display ereader that's perfect for school kids. What this non-profit should do is start over with flex display ereaders. They'll have much better success.

Computers for in class use solves the multimedia bit and flex display ereaders issued to individual students to read books on. You don't need color to read literature.

I noticed the device in the demo used buttons rather than touch. Does the flexible plastic technology negate having the touch feature?

Given that the IR touchscreen used by most modern eInk devices has no connection whatsoever with the eInk display, there's really no reason that it should.

Harry is correct, IR touch screens could be used with a flexible display. However, to work the case would need to be rigid, or the IR transmitters would not align with receivers. They probably used a flexible case to demo the product (look how far I can bend it!) and that would negate using and IR touch screen.

They might be able to use a resistive touch screen bonded directly to the flexible display as well, but I'm not sure about capacitive.

It's funny how people automatically think a gadget with a display is a touchscreen. When I show friends my Kindle NT, the first thing they do is swipe the screen to change pages. When I tell them it's not a touchscreen, they act a bit disappointed and usually say they would only want one if it had a touchscreen.

Touch is so ingrained in society these days.
