Calibre: edit metadata doesn't work

if I try to edit the metadata of a book in Calibre , the search doesn't work.
it keeps trying and trying but nothing happens.
If I cancel and look at the log it says:
" calibre, version 0.8.53. ERROR: Download failed: Failed to download metadata. Click Show Details to see details
Traceback (most recent call last): File "site-packages/calibre/gui2/metadata/single_download.py", line 401, in run
TypeError: 'NoneType' object is not iterable'
this message I get with all boks I try.

What can I do ?

Thanks, but I use Mac OSX, so that's not a solution

Well check for stale proxy setting wherever they are stored in OS X. You can see what proxy setting calibre is using, if any, via Preferences->Miscellaneous
