Facebook OS vs Android and Apple?

According to "informed", long-running rumors, Facebook will come out with a Smartphone soon. What I didn't know, and what surprises me most is that it will have its own OS.

Rumor has it they might buy Opera.

Does the world need another mobile OS? and will developers jump on board?

This is a two horse race - Android and iOS. No one else stands a chance for a significant share of the market; not even Windows.

Answer to the first question - Need, no. Would it be nice, yes. Why not more choice for us consumers?
Answer to the second question - Dunno.

The last part is unfortunately looking more and more true.

Never happen. Facebook is a one trick pony. They've succeeded with Facebook and will continue to succeed because most normal users are happy with what they have and too dumb to look for a better alternative. But they won't change to a new OS just for Facebook-why would they? They already have it on their own OS.

Its not about being dumb or smart it is the lockin how do you expect people to look for something else when everyone they know is on it. Plus no one is stopping facebook from buying out other social networks that could be a threat to it such as instagram.

It wasn't all that long ago that no one stood a chance against Blackberry and Nokia.

And it'll take a new company to challenge the Big Two. Blackberry, Nokia, Palm, and Windows all had their chance and blew it.

I could see a facebook phone being largely successful, just because there's a boat-load of people who pretty much live and breathe the Zuckerberg kool-ade. But, being a serious player in the mobile OS market? Yeah, I don't think so.

It's very hard to speculate rumors when it's not been proven but it's somewhat good to let us know some new trends and changes on the world of mobile apps and OS.

It's just awkward to see facebook want to reign over everything to get some spotlight. What would we expect next? "facebook smartphone"?LOL

It doesn't really say it's it's own OS. Chances are it will pull an Amazon and reskin Android. Of course there is always Ubuntu they could go with.

My take is FB creates unreliable/glitchy software, I'm thinking the last thing anybody wants is a smartphone created by FB.

I could see many youngsters buying a Facebook phone, since their life revolves around what happens on... Facebook.

This would only work of course, if Facebook Inc. decided to kill all Facebook apps on other OS', which would be a major death blow to themselves. I don't see *that* happening.
