In fairness, this isn't international, it's for Spanish-speakers in the US. It's a huge and growing market, but it's still domestic.

Gotcha. I assumed that it was following the French and German stores opened in Europe. I didn't read the articles.

Is this the first Spanish based store in the US or do BN, Kobo, and Sony have something similar?

Good question. Not being a Spanish-speaker myself, I haven't had occasion to investigate that.

My guess is that it's both to tap into the domestic Spanish market and to build a collection of Spanish language ebooks prior to opening international ebook stores for Spanish speakers.

Except that there are likely to be geographic restrictions on the e-books. Tapping into the US market makes sense though.

I'm not sure that's true. I can access the new Spanish site and books show as available to me (in Canada), so I assume this is set up the same way the main amazon.com site is set up to deliver books to international customers now.

B&N has been advertising the same thing since nov 2010:

For the record, Amazon *already* had those books in their NorthAm bookstore; what they added was a spanish language "portal" within the Kindle store to highlight and aggregate the spanish language books. (Which is what B&N did). Makes them easier to pick out.

Also, it is distinct and separate from the Amazon Kindle store for Spain.

Amazon have had a Spanish eBook store for people in Spain for quite a while (http://www.amazon.es), but, like the other "national" Amazon stores (UK, France, Germany, Italy) it's only available to people in Spain.
