There's a version of Garamond that uses the Open Font License (EB Garamond). However, I think either Windows or MS Office includes Garamond (by Monotype Corporation) so you might already have it in your system. Since you won't be redistributing the ebooks, I don't see any issue in embedding the fonts in your own copy.

This might have already been mentioned (I've read the whole thread but it was a few days ago and don't feel like searching each page again). I wanted to buy the GB version of the audiobooks (still deciding on which for the e-books) so I used the recommended scheme of having 2 emails - sent a gift to my 2nd email. Here's the weird thing, though, once I got the email and retrieved the gift code, I was able to use it from the primary Pottermore account (set up with my 1st email, the one I bought from here in the US). I actually didn't mean to but accidentally hadn't logged out, and put the code in and downloaded the book. So you don't even need a 2nd Pottermore account, just the 2 emails.

It was reported that Pottermore sold $1.5 million worth in the first 3 days.

I expected more to be honest.

That site probably took a lot of money to set up. Though in the long-run, it will be worth it.

Pottermore took a lot to set up, the e-book shop was probably pretty easy to build. I would say 1.5 million in three days is pretty darn good for books that have been out for over a decade. With movies. And a theme park. And Video Games.

The Harry Potter market is pretty saturated.

The other question is how many die hard Harry Potter fans have E-Readers? What percentage of those folks bought the e-books? The Potter folks are surprised they sold so many.

If Sony had half a brain, they would eat the cost and offer a Sony e-reader that came with all 7 books for free and a Harry Potter cover to sell its e-reader. It would get people in the door, buying their reader, and potentially buying books. Then again, if Sony had half a brain it would have a better bookstore.

It is a shame that JKR teamed with Sony and not Kobo. Kobo has a better bookstore and would be in a better position to pull off a promotional event that would really sell its E-Reader and bookstore. I don't think she could team with BN because it is not an international reader. I don't think she wanted to team with Amazon because Amazon probably would have tried to make the titles exclusive to Amazon. But Kobo could have done something interesting with this.

Sony is just going to blow the oppertunity it has.

The problem is that Pottermore is not just (or even primarily) about ebooks.
Pottermore is supposed to be more about fan service and outreach than book selling which is why the choice of Sony (on paper) makes sense; Sony does have extensive experience setting up and running interactive web sites for MMORPGS, which is something neither Kobo nor B&N could've offered up. Amazon has more than enough online capabilities to pull it off (as do Google, Facebook, and Microsoft) but haven't actually done it.
So it was a choice between Sony's experience (and acknowledged failings in delivering secure, stable software, or even meeting schedules) and more competent but less experienced partners.

Plus, Sony was run by a Brit at the time the contract was signed and Rowling does favor British solutions when all else is equal.

She could have signed with any number of companies to build the Pottermore experience. Sony is not the only one with MMORPGS. She could have chosen a company that has similar experience and did not sell e-books and then selected another e-book reader to partner with.

Or, in the name of fairness and not picking sides, she could have allowed all the e-book companies to have a chance at putting together a package that provide a reader, the books, and a cool cover. I am guessing that there are parents and grandparents that would have happily bought a $150 Kindle/Sony/Kobo/Nook that came loaded with the books and a really cool cover.

Sony is going to bungle the e-reader oppertunities here. Heck, the T1 is selling for $79-$89 at Non-Sony stores in the US and people are being told that it is not going to be restocked. At least, that is what I was reading on the Sony boards the last few months. That does not sound like a great sign of things to come.

JKR is the Queen of connecting Harry Potter to various brands and markets, she botched this one.

Does this mean they also have to be free to buy at some point?

Nice. So Prime members in the US can read one a month for free.

If you are not a Prime Member in the US you can still buy them, they are not going to be free.

It'll take seven months to read these. That's a long time.

Not everyone reads very quickly. Books four - 7 are all over 400 pages. If you are reading them outloud to your kid as a bed time story you would be happy to have that time.

If you're reading the later books to kids as bed time stories, expect to be up all night comforting them from the nightmares.

My 8 year old Nephews all read the Harry Potter books and their were no nightmares. They understood it was a fictional story and had no problems with it. My 9 year old Neice just finished the series and had no issues.

Different kids respond to the books in different ways. I am sure that some kids had problems with the material in the later books. I also think that many younger kids who were reading the later books did not catch on to some of the bigger, more adult themes.

It is kind of like taking a kid to a Disney movie. There is always stuff in the movie that the adults laugh at or grin at and the kids totally miss it. They don't have the same life experiences so they don't respond the way an adult would. I imagine that is the same way for a wide variety of books. There are some scary scenes in Harry Potter but unless a child have had some very real life experiences he/she may not glean on to how serious the situation is and won't react the same way an adult would.

(shrugs)

I laughed at my older brother because book 7 came out two weeks before I went on a camping trip with his family. He was so worried that I would spoil the book for my Nephew, then 9, that they made sure to read and finish the book before the trip. My Nephew found is as silly as I did but we had a good time discussing the book and starting to re-read it together.

My Neice told me that Doobie (sp) would be a good name for her cousin because it would be nice to remember his sacrifice. She also recommended Voldemort, Creature, Severus, Tom Riddle, and Draco because she tends to like the bad guys in books and movies more than the good guys. She loves Darth Vader and thought Anikin would be a good name as well.

I am going with no harm done.
