Wallace, Edgar: The Green Ribbon. V1. 11 March 2012
"I think it is the best racing thriller I have written." - Edgar Wallace.
So reads a blurb on this 1929 novel.
Wallace, a very keen punter and author of countless tipping columns in newspapers, featured the world of horse racing in a number novels, such as The Twister, The Calender, and Grey Timothy, to name a few.
This novel centres of a betting syndicate involving the jovial Mr Trigger, the sinister Dr Blanter, the strange Mr Goodie, and the slippery disbarred lawyer Rustem.
Arrayed against them, representing Scotland Yard, is Chief Inspector M M Luke, and representing herself, heiress Edna Grey.
There is a rousing climax with two black panthers loose and of course the baddies get their comeuppance.
