2014 Pulitzer Prize in History
The 2014 Pulitzer Prize in History was announced today. the winner was:
"The Internal Enemy: Slavery and War in Virginia, 1772-1832" by Alan Taylor
An excellent book about how slavery was evolving in the Chesapeake after the American Revolution, and in particular, how it was impacted by the British invasion of the Chesapeake during the War of 1812.
The non-winning nominated finalists are:
A Dreadful Deceit: The Myth of Race from the Colonial Era to Obama's America by Jacqueline Jones
A deeply researched examination of how race as a social invention has retained its power to organize, mark and harm the lives of Americans.
Command and Control: Nuclear Weapons, the Damascus Accident and the Illusion of Safety by Eric Schlosser
A chilling history of the management of America’s nuclear arsenal, exploring the fateful challenges and chronicling the "near misses" that could have triggered a cataclysm.
I have "Command and Control" on my TBR (it was also a finalist for the 2014 Lionel Gelber Prize). "A Dreadful Deceit" sounds quite interesting. Has anyone read it yet who would care to comment?
