Plastic Logic introduces 10.7" reader in Russia

See their press announcement:
Plastic Logic 100

German heise.de writes that the cost is to be about EUR 300.

A 10.7" device? I do want that thing!

Fantastic. I wonder how I can convince them to send me one or perhaps lose one in a bar.....

For the education program, the Plastic Logic 100 electronic textbook will come equipped with more than 40 books covering the subject matter taught in grades 6 and 7, as agreed upon with education regions to meet their learning processes.

I see they're giving it another go, good luck to them. But with a wholesale price (12000 rubles = £250/€291) that's already about twice as much as current 6" readers at retail with tax I foresee a limited market.

its an over 10" plastic unbreakable display and comes with all of the students text books for 6th and 7th grade preloaded. the premium over a simple glass based display ereader is well worth it.

I much prefer the actual link since embedded YouTube doesn't allow full screen.

Specs look impressive.
I would definitely buy one if they release this product for consumers. I lost my hope waiting for a good 9.7" eink reader.

PL is betting that they've finally found a market where they can offer a unique value. Clearly the selling point is that the price of the reader can be amortised over several years during which the school can avoid the cost of replacing textbooks that have been damaged by the kids.

But when Amazon doesn't even bother to offer the DX for sale in the UK I very much doubt that Plastic Logic is going to waste its efforts trying to get this into retail channels. How many are going to buy this at the £300-350 it would cost after tax and retail markup?

Has there been any information about scratch protection or resistance for the Plastic Logic non-glass screens? I know there are perspex (aka Plexiglas) plastics which can be pretty close to Gorilla glass in scratch resistance but those plastics are usually far more costly than the glass analogs. In the hands of kids or just normal use I worry about small wear mark affecting the clarity of these as they are not backlit.

That looks pretty good. The way the guy tapped it with the metal thingy, it must not have a glass layer. You wouldn't want to do that to a kindle, or a LCD tablet.

I'd like to see them release one for the general market, with a smaller bezel (the thing is only one inch bigger diag. than the iPad, but it dwarfs it).

Correct. Plastic Logic claim to fame is the ability to create plastic transistors. Using that tech they have been able to create and now manufacture plastic tft backplanes for displays. they marry their flexible plastic tft's to Einks front planes at their display production facility in Dresden Germany. They have recently been heavily financed by Rusnano and will break ground on a new facility in Zelenograd, Russia very soon

I guess there's very little chance this technology comes to the next Kindle then...too bad, it would have been a nice feature.
