Elizabeth Von Arnim [Marie Annette Beauchamp]
Elizabeth and her German Garden
Ditzy woman makes a garden and brings up her children in Pomerania.
This can be read as a lightweight, rather humorous account. Early male reviewers thought that the author was selfish in spending so much time in her garden. Feminist scholars have taken to interpreting it as a woman’s insistence on having some private space, despite the attempted encroachments of husband, children and visitors.
The text is from PG and has had some typos and other errors corrected. It is derived from the Macmillan (1900) edition and differs from the paperback Virago version: one chapter has been replaced by another at some point.
