.Black Rain sounds really intriguing - most of the others are either a bit meh as far as I'm concerned, or I've already read them (one falls into both categories...). |

Lolita was my second choice. I'm normally not interested in this type of subject matter, but it is widely regarded as one of the greatest books of modern literature (it is on most of the top 100 lists), and is also a highly acclaimed film. I'd like to see if Nabokov was able to write a sympathetic protagonist who is a pedophile, or if all the critics are out of their collective minds. I figure it is one or the other, and I'm curious as to which.

hard choice, several are books on my tbr pile. P & P is the only one I've already read so this fits nicely w/my 2012 challenge to read 100 books I've never read before.

A fine selection if I might say so.

For the cost-conscious, especially at this time of year, Orthodoxy is a great choice!

I admire the moderators' discretion. I would be lying, however, if I said I wasn't curious as well.

Doubt if we'll ever know. Usually it's between mods and poster and (thankfully) the mods are full of discretion. A quick perusal of Jon's latest posts shows nothing beyond his usual pain-in-the-a$$-nes.

A quick note about JSWolf:
I understand that there is much curiosity about the temporary suspension, but it is the policy of the Team not to publicly discuss moderator decisions. If he decides he wants to share that information privately via PM upon his return, that is up to him. I will say that personally I like Jon and will be glad to see him back.

Cost conscious is good! This year, I really have to remind myself that one of the reasons I joined this book club was to explore and expand my tastes. Woman can not live on fantasy & ya series alone.

I hope Jon will be back soon!
I'm on the hunt for Black Rain now, and I can probably get it at my library once it reopens. Initially I wasn't particularly interested in reading it, but, as so often here in the Book Club, I got curious and now I really want to read it! Much more than the one I voted for, actually!

I'll try to get Black Rain from the library if it should win. It seems like they only have it in Norwegian(translated from English ), but hopefully that won't matter to much.

So I did some checking....
There is apperantly 1 copy of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold in my county, 1 copy of the Annotated Lolita, and no copies of Black Rain. Yay ![]() Edited to add: I also looked for The Spy Who Came in from the Cold at the local used book store, and they had just about every other le Carré title, but that one. I didn't bother looking for Lolita, and of course, there was no Black Rain. I allowed myself the caveat of "Depending on price and availability" when I challenged myself to read each and every MR Book Club selection, but I'd hate to miss out on the very first selection of the year.
