Bargain audiobooks - AudioGo Deal of the Day 75% off selected [MP3 Download]

AudioGO, that division of the BBC who've given us some nice freebies in the past, have been running this Deal of the Day sale for December.

I've been ignoring these since it started, since at first they only had deals on the CDs.

But now they're also extending the deal to 75% off the price of the MP3 download version of whatever the selected Deal of the Day is, which is making for some fairly nice-looking deals that MR-goers from around the world might be interested in.

Today's Deal, which the newsletter says will be good until 10 am on the 13th, UK time, is for BBC Radio's Full Cast Audio dramatisation (1h45mins) of Agatha Christie's Towards Zero, for a mere £1.69, no special coupon codes required (regularly £6.79). AudioGO sells around the world and for this title, the price drops to £1.41 for Canadians & US persons, since the VAT gets deducted for non-EU foreigners.

Lady Tresselian invites several guests to stay at her seaside house at Gull’s Point. Against her better judgment she has allowed her late husband’s ward, handsome tennis ace Neville Strange, and his wife Kay to come at the same time as Neville’s ex-wife Audrey. Other guests include Mary, Lady Tresselian’s companion; Ted, Kay’s ever-present friend; Thomas, a family friend who has just returned from spending the war in Africa and Lady Tresselian’s old friend Lord Justice Treves.

When death visits Gull’s Point the house party is thrown into turmoil. It is left to Scotland Yard’s Detective Inspector Leach and Mr MacWhirter, an ex-detective who is also house guest, to solve the case.

A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of a classic Agatha Christie mystery, starring Philip Fox as Detective Inspector Leach with Hugh Bonneville and Marcia Warren.

AudioGO's deal of the day is for David Attenborough's Life on the Air: Memoirs of a Broadcaster, read by Attenborough himself, for £5.25 (regularly £20.99). It's 19h23mins long and the price will be good until 10am UK time on the 14th.

His career as a naturalist and broadcaster has spanned nearly five decades and there are very few places on the globe that he has not visited. In this volume of memoirs David tells stories of the people and animals he has met and the places that he has visited.

Over the last 25 years he has established himself as the world's leading Natural History programme maker with several landmark BBC series, most recently the hugely popular 'Life' and 'Blue Planet', alongside 'Life on Earth', 'The Living Planet', 'The Trials of Life', 'The Private Life of Plants' and 'Life of Birds'.

An updated autobiography of David Attenborough's life, read by David Attenborough.

Yesterday's offer was CD-only, but just in time for Jane Austen's birthday tomorrow, AudioGO's deal of the day (good until 10am UK time on the 16th), is for complete & unabridged (12h10mins) Pride & Prejudice, read by Lindsay Duncan, for £4.92/£4.10 in VAT-less countries (regularly £19.69).

‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a fortune, must be in want of a wife’.

With these words Jane Austen’s best-loved novel opens, introducing the Bennet family. With the arrival in the neighbourhood of not one, but two gentlemen of fortune, Mrs Bennet has high hopes for her daughters’ marriage prospects. But, for Elizabeth Bennet, prejudice prevents her from seeing the good qualities of Mr Darcy, and for him, pride is almost his downfall.

If you are interested in those Austen-derivative spin-off novels, publisher Sourcebooks is holding a sale on theirs at $1.99 ea for your choice of 11 titles, good until Dec 30th across multiple stores (may not be available in all regions). Details in this thread here.

It turns out that the official updated daily page for this promo is at the "Christmas Store" section of AudioGO's website, though it has a flash slideshow thing you have to page through if you don't want to wait for the autoplay to load the deals.

The Deal of the Day for the 17th (good until 10am UK time on the 18th) is for the BBC Radio Drama Torchwood: The Lost Files: The Complete Series, tying into the popular TV series, 2h15mins for £2.30 (less without VAT), down from £9.19.

John Barrowman, Eve Myles and Gareth David-Lloyd star in three Torchwood radio adventures from the Lost Files, each set before the TV story ‘Children of Earth’.

‘The Devil and Miss Carew’ sees Gwen and Rhys involved in a nursing home mystery. Why is Miss Carew, an octogenarian with terminal heart disease, suddenly looking so fit and healthy? And what is her connection with the mysterious power cuts that are sweeping the nation? Written by Rupert Laight.

‘Submission’ finds the Torchwood team heading for the bottom of the sea - the Mariana Trench - after they intercept a distress call. But when the submarine they are on crashes, they find themselves at the mercy of a hungry alien... Written by Ryan Scott.

‘The House of the Dead’ sees a special séance being held at the most haunted pub in Wales. The House of the Dead is about to close, and many regulars have turned up on the last night in the hope of seeing their deceased loved ones. But then the ghosts start arriving - and all hell breaks loose... Written by James Goss.

The email newsletter also gives advance notice of Sunday's Deal (good from 10am Sunday to 10am Monday), which is another BBC Radio offering, The Infinite Monkey Cage: The Complete Series 1 which appears to be a physics-based science comedy show. It will go for £1.70 for the 1h45mins of all four episodes, down from £6.79.

The Infinite Monkey Cage: The Complete Series 1 (BBC Radio 4: Comedy)

Sony Radio Academy Gold Award-winning BBC Radio 4 Series in which physicist Brian Cox and comedian Robin Ince take a witty, irreverent and unashamedly rational look at the world according to science. Originally broadcast from 30 November 2009 - 21 December 2009.

In the first episode, 'Comedy, Dinos, Scientific Method, Funding', former cosmologist Dara O'Briain and Dr Alice Roberts join Brian Cox and Robin Ince and ask why so many comedians seem to start life as scientists, and begin their quest to put science at the heart of popular culture.

Episode 2, 'SETI, Conspiracy, Golden Record', Robin and Brian are joined by alien abduction expert Jon Ronson and Seth Shostack from the SETI Institute in California to discuss science conspiracies, UFOs and the search for ET.

In the third episode, 'Quantum Theory, Astrology, CERN', physicist turned comedian Ben Miller joins Brian and Robin to discuss quantum physics, and to explore whether astrology really shares its roots with more scientific pursuits. They also discuss the largest scientific experiment ever undertaken, currently storming ahead in a large underground tunnel just outside Geneva.

In the fourth and final episode of this series, Robin and Brian are joined by Victor Stock, Dean of Guildford Cathedral, and science journalist Adam Rutherford for a special Christmas edition of the programme, 'Science and Religion'. Adam explains why religion really could be good for your health. Can Victor convert Robin and Brian in time for the festive season?

Winner of a Sony Radio Academy Gold Award for Best Speech Programme: 'A brilliant way of being both innovative and instructive, bringing humour to what some will see as a dull subject. It's listenable, educational and brings a whole new audience to both the subject and the station' - The Judges

I was a bit annoyed that I didn't see this until about 12 hours after it was supposed to finish, but managed to get it for £2.29 anyway. Thank you, and have some karma.

Actually, it's supposed to be the Saturday deal, but it was me who put the date down wrong.

But glad you were able to pick up something you wanted, and from now on I'll put both the name of the day as well as the (hopefully correct) number, so that there's less chance of someone missing a deal they thought was over due to my mistake.

Due to system glitches, AudioGO are extending Sunday's Deal on the BBC Radio science-based comedy show The Infinite Monkey Cage: Complete Series 1 (details and linkage in post #4) another 24 hours until 10 am UK time on Tuesday.

The Deal for today, Monday 19th, good until the same time Tuesday as the extension above, is for a festive BBC Radio play, Season's Greetings (Classic Radio Theatre), written by Alan Ayckbourn. This is 1h30mins and will cost you £1.69 (less in VAT-less countries), down from £6.62.

A sparkling BBC Radio 4 production of Alan Ayckbourn’s festive play, starring Frances Barber, Phil Daniels, Bill Nighy, Geoffrey Palmer and John Sessions

Christmas is the season of good cheer and harmony among men, but things are not working out quite that way in the Bunker household. As a motley collection of friends and relatives fill the house with their own wishes, dreams and attitudes, the stage is set for seasonal disharmony and romantic intrigue.

It’s Christmas Eve and while Belinda is rushing around decorating the tree and seeing to all the guests and their needs, Eddie and Pattie are having a serious bust-up. Added to all of this, Bernard is conducting a chaotic rehearsal of his annual gift for the children - a puppet show of The Three Little Pigs - as his wife, Phyllis gets quietly sloshed in the kitchen on the cooking wine. Then something disastrous occurs...

The AudioGO Deal of the Day for Tuesday the 20th, good until 10am UK time on Wednesday is another BBC Radio comedy show, the popular Ladies of Letters Go Crackers Christmas special, in a series about two snarky older women observing the world around them. This is 1h30mins for £1.69 (less in VAT-less countries, and down from £6.79).

As always, you can keep track of the Deal of the Day and any assorted Xmas discounts yourself by visiting AudioGO's special "Christmas Store" page.

It's Christmas and the Ladies of Letters are busy stuffing home made turkey sausages, adding hot pepper to their mulled wine and giving each other totally unsuitable Christmas presents.

Vera has just returned from a festive trip to the Holy Land, where she has purchased Mary Mother of Jesus Jam and realised that the only universal religion is shopping. Then she and her family face homelessness when a heartless Bank buys up The Bothy for redevelopment.

Irene, meanwhile, is inundated with family visiting for the Festive Season and is annoyed that Vera seems too caught up in her own concerns to consider hers. But Irene has to hold back on her grievances when Vera's daughter Karen finds a lump - not as Vera originally thought, in her Nigella-style Christmas gravy - but in her breast.

As family descend on them both, pressure mounts and Christmas chaos inevitably ensues in this eleventh series of the radio comedy.

Prunella Scales and Anne Reid star in this fractious festive series of the popular BBC Radio 4 comedy.

Deal of the Day for Wednesday the 21st (good until 10am UK time Thursday) is another BBC Radio comedy show, Cabin Pressure: Series 2, 3hrs for £2.74 (less without VAT, down from £10.99).

Stephanie Cole ('Doc Martin'), Benedict Cumberbatch and Roger Allam ('The Thick of It') star in the complete second series of the hit sitcom about the pilots of a tiny charter airline for whom no job is too small, but many, many jobs are too difficult. Written by John Finnemore, writer for 'The News Quiz', and 'That Mitchell & Webb Sound'.

Run by the forbidding divorcée Carolyn Knapp-Shappey (an unfortunate marriage, namewise, but in Carolyn’s opinion, marginally better than Carolyn Shappey-Knapp), her two pilots are the smooth, experienced and almost-certainly-fired-by-a-big-airline-for-all-round naughtiness Douglas, and struggling almost-competent pilot Martin. All-round help is provided by Carolyn’s near-idiot son, Arthur...

'Unexpectedly brilliant' - Time Out. 'An inspired new sitcom' – Observer. 'I cannot find a single flaw in it. So top marks.' - Independent on Sunday.

Full cast, starring Stephanie Cole, Roger Allam, Benedict Cumberbatch and John Finnemore

AudioGO was having site difficulties yesterday, so I was expecting them to extend the Deal period again, but no go (no pun intended, but taken advantage of anyway).

The final two Deals for Friday the 23rd and Saturday the 24th are:

Friday 23rd, good until Saturday 10am UK time, is the holiday special for the popular BBC Radio comedy I'm Sorry I Haven't A Christmas Clue, 2h30 mins for £2.29 (less without VAT, down from £6.62).

The celebrated 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Christmas Carol', plus a look back at festive Clues from bygone years.

Originally broadcast on Christmas Day 2003, the 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue' Players present their unique interpretation of Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol', starring Humphrey Lyttelton as Ebenezer Scrumph, Colin Sell as his downtrodden assistant Crotchet, and Graeme Garden, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Barry Cryer as the Ghosts of Christmas Future, Present and P*ssed. This Yuletide extravaganza is not to be missed!

Plus, there's a generous stockingful of silly games and pointless revelry from the merry gentlemen of the Clue team, including some memorable moments from the much-missed Willie Rushton. Join them for a feast of festive fun with all the seasonal trimmings.

For Saturday the 24th, good until 10 am UK time on Xmas Sunday, the Deal will be Christmas Book at Bedtime: The Complete Series, a set of 8 BBC Radio readings of festive short stories done by well-known UK actors, 1h50mins for £1.75 (less without VAT, down from £6.79).

Eight seasonal stories from BBC Radio 4's 'Book at Bedtime'. Everyone loves a bedtime story. And here are eight of the best, each with a Christmas theme, written by an array of literature's best-known names: Laurie Lee, Charles Dickens and Hans Christian Andersen are just some of the storytellers included in this collection. Amongst those giving voice to these stories are Patricia Routledge, Joss Ackland, Miriam Margolyes, Dame Judi Dench and Richard Briers.

Intriguing, funny, poignant and above all entertaining, these eight Christmas stories are the best of BBC Radio 4's 'Book at Bedtime'.

I hope some of you* were able to take advantage of the savings on stuff you might have wanted, and happy listening if you did!

* Okay, more than one of you.

Well, I've already said that I got the Torchwood series. None of the other offers really appealed, but thanks for helping me get that. Hopefully some others have also found bargains.
