Looks like vaporware.
You can't buy it, only sign up for a newsletter...and probably an avalanche of spam.

It's a nifty concept and I would love to see one of the "working prototypes" in action.

Why would I want to pay for something like that when I could just turn on a lamp like I would with a paper book?

This is the actual product website.
http://www.flexlighting.com/ Looking at the pics, it would appear this is an OEM option to install, not for end users. |

Looks really great, should work wonderfully with all the nice TOUCH screen e-Readers... and it's another "we've got this wonderful tech, look..." only we haven't, just a concept again... hey, it's a thin and flexible version of Sony's original light wedge... wake me up if it makes it to market...

The answer is the same. Because it would be better and require fewer extra items to accomplish the same task. You could take 10 books with you on a 2-week trip to Europe, or you could take one ereader with 100 books on it, get another 100 on your trip, and still have just the ereader. Similarly, you could have to rely on having a lamp within the proper range, or the right kind of case light, which requires you to either drag around an extra item or keep yourself close to a power outlet... or you could have the option to light the screen from within the device when it's dark. The latter is better. That's why. I'd love to see this materialize. We'll see.

The physical books v ereader argument isn't really the same. If you need a light to read an ereader, you probably need it to read a book. So, did all those interested in e-ink lighting really buy a clip on light for physical books, because that seems the only genuine analogy to me?

I have a much simpler solution to the back-lit ebook conundrum. Simply add a thin layer of radium to the underside of the screen. This would accommodate reading in pitch dark.
I'd personally implement this idea but but wacko-environmentalists, meanie-greenies, the NRC, FDA, and probably even Underwriter's Labs would all gang up on me. PETA would probably be okay with it though. |

Doesn't radium impart a greenish glow?

The more I think about this, the more I like it. You could sandwich the radium layer between two molecular-thin layers of silicon and draw enough current to keep your batteries charged for at least 500 or so years.
