When highlighting, my Paperwhite 2's battery drains pretty quickly...

Is that normal? I'm talking about like after one book, the thing just tells me that it needs a recharge.

You can't be highlighting that much, or you'd hit the highlighting limit. Shouldn't make that much of a difference in battery, I wouldn't think.

Highlighting will certainly increase battery usage, because it involves constant screen updates as you extend the selection. You must be doing an awful lot of highlighting, though, for it to result in a visible battery drain!

What's the highlighting limit? I have 175 passages in said book.,, Yeah, that explains it. Well gosh.

It was a textbook BTW.

The limit depends on the book. For books with no DRM, it's unlimited. Books with DRM can impose a limit, which is expressed as a percentage of the book that can be highlighted. 10% is a common limit (which should be more than enough for most purposes!).

Alright, good to know. Maybe I'll just keep a notebook handy from now on.

Do you guys that have the arrows find it better for highlighting? I have a hard time using my fingers.

When I had my Paperwhite 2 I highlighted and wrote notes constantly, and while it did increase battery usage, it didn't really materially effect how much reading time I got out of it. Certainly not after a single book.

Highlighting + syncing does it. Especially over 3g. I found that highlighting in aeroplane mode did not affect my battery life much, but if it is syncing, it can drain things pretty quickly.

I've found that, if you read pbooks, Kindle battery endures more & more.

Another factor is the size of My Clippings.txt. The larger that gets, the more re-indexing needs to happen (for that file) and consequent CPU activity. One needs to purge it from time to time.

Yes, that's a very good point. Just copy it to your PC and delete it from the Kindle. It will automatically be recreated the next time you highlight something.

How many hours of reading?

How many hours of reading did you put in to finish an entire eBook? I believe that is the factor which causes the battery drain, not highlights at all.

I have loads of eBooks and loads of highlights and notes and have never deleted any files on my Kindles or my Samsung s5 smart phone. I have not noticed any deterioration of the batteries on any of the devices from that situation.

However, I do leave the Kindles in Airplane Mode when not in use and leave my s5 in Ultra Power Savings Mode when not in use. That does conserve battery juice.

All my highlights and notes are preserved here:

https://kindle.amazon.com/your_highlights

Thus, I never have to access any text files on my devices to use them. I can freely copy and paste from that IP link to any other documents as needed.
