Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime: the first quad-core Tegra 3 tablet arrives in early December for $499

Asus promised an official launch of its Eee Pad Transformer Prime on November 9th, and not a moment too late, the company is ready to give up the remaining details on its forthcoming tablet. However, those hoping that "launch" meant the world's first quad-core Tegra 3 tablet would start hitting stores today should be prepared to be disappointed — the $499 tablet (with 32GB of storage) and its $149 keyboard dock won't be arriving until early December. (The 64GB version will ring up at $599.) That said, after you read on below about all the improvements, you'll likely think it's worth the wait.

My thoughts exactly. I doubt there is any app that can fully exploit the power of those 4 cores. I can only think of video editing apps that could benefit from this, but those are not that friendly to use on a tablet, you really need a keyboard and mouse (though the Prime gives you that if you get the dock). Probably mostly marketing hype at this time, but it may open the gates for new apps to fully exploit the tablet capabilities.

They should work on trying to build a bigger install base with what they have. 11.1 million iPads sold in Sept alone.

Yep. Laptops are on the way out. Tablets with keyboard docks will be the next craze.

But seriously the T3( quad core--it really has 5 cores) allows the tablet to processes 1080p video and other high end graphics (shades,colors,lighting,etc...) and consume less energy. That is part of the reason why the battery life went from 8hrs to 12hrs.

The reality of tablets is that they are used mainly for entertainment so handling video and games with long battery life is very important.


But aside from the core the Transformer has a lot of updates that make this tablet sweet indeed

Nice breakdown of the Transformer Prime features, it really is a sexy tablet.

Actually, a tablet is perfect ergonomically for music applications – notation, obviously, but also tracking, mixing, patch bays, soft synths and digital recording. For those kinds of things, quad core would be perfect, too.

There's just one problem: Finding industry-level software tailored for an android tablet.

The problem is that app makers will tend to target mid level devices, not your bleeding edge stuff. By the time apps that take adv of the quad cores come out, you're ready for a new tablet.

But yeah that does look quite kick ass. Wish the kbd dock were cheaper.

I want more economic chips, not faster, hotter and more battery-hungry. Let's not forget this is mobile, not a desktop.

I might be with you on rendering and compiling, but as your attorney, I urge you to rethink gaming.

If only übergeeks care about mobile gaming, then what is an iPad 2? What is a PSP Vita? What, for that matter, is your smartphone or my niece's 3DS?

also this chipest actually is much more effecient than your dual core cpu.

As well if there wasnt any gaming you wouldnt have the nice computers, laptops,tablets and whatnot.

If it wasnt for gamers then you would not have high quality photo editing and movie editing software.

If it wasnt for gamers you would not have CGI in your movies you would still be stuck with motion capture.

If it wasnt for gamers wanting their music on thier computers you wouldnt have whats become the ipod/iphone/ipad early electronic reading was pionered by gamers.

Your fancy UI in almost all of computers these days were very much influenced by gamers most people dont remember how much od a pain in the butt Dos was.

Video thats used online in just about every form was first done and polished in games. before that it was all still on film.
Modern 3d television and movies? again video games!
These are features and evolutions directed towards gamers that have later become mainstream

Dont be to quick to dismis gamers. Because gamers are the major catalyst for Electronic evolution.
